Quite a lot of people don't have fonts for other languages, and even those who want to view other languages on their computer, such as Japanese, don't know how to.

Installing East Asian fonts on Windows XP: (you can install the right to left fonts following these directions if you figure it out yourself)
http://www.coscom.co.jp/japanesefont/japanesefont/japanesefont.html

GNU Unifont (will allow you to view quite a lot of languages, although it's low-quality, but it's quite good for IRC):
http://unifoundry.com/unifont.html

A much bigger Unicode resource:
http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/

Open-source and free fonts (that people won't sue you for downloading or editing, because it wouldn't be pirating):
http://www.unifont.org/

If you have links to Unicode fonts, etc, you can post them here if you want to.

Kannada Unicode Entries-
http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/bylanguage/kannadachart.html

Gives the font packs for using this language.
I don't speak it, but my Unicode tables were rather limited, so I installed it.

EDIT: s**t, another year-old topic.

Updated the sticky to have a few new links.

I do have to say... you ARE still allowed to post here, even if it's old. Originally, stickies were exempt, but then bumping became mostly-allowed.

Well, kinda glad to hear that Vista comes with them pre-installed.

I thought Linux was the only OS to do that. XD

I just discovered the wonders of the Compose key. If you use X, add “compose:ralt” (or rwin or lalt) to the XkbOptions in your xorg.conf and boom, instant special character typing. Example (mine has a few extra options):
Code: [Select]
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"

Option "XkbVariant" "dvorak"
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps,compose:ralt"
EndSection

Now é is <ralt> ' e, only three keystrokes.

Since it would be a real shame for such a cool feature to go unnoticed, here’s how to activate it via a pretty GUI.

The compose key is much more flexible than that. You can use it for more than just accented characters (example: £ ¥ © ¹ ² ¼ « took me just a few seconds to type). There are many nice Unicode characters like “ ” — … → and so forth.

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anything close to it on Windows, whether built‐in or as an external program.
