Unicode resources (Japanese/Chinese/Korean fonts, right to left fonts, etc)

Quite a lot of people don't have fonts for other languages, and even those who want to view other languages on their computer, such as Japanese, don't know how to.

Installing East Asian fonts on Windows XP: (you can install the right to left fonts following these directions if you figure it out yourself)

I just discovered the wonders of the Compose key. If you use X, add “compose:ralt” (or rwin or lalt) to the XkbOptions in your xorg.conf and boom, instant special character typing. Example (mine has a few extra options):

Now é is <ralt> ' e, only three keystrokes.

Since it would be a real shame for such a cool feature to go unnoticed, here’s how to activate it via a pretty GUI.

I use the UK-Extended keyboard layout, so é is <alt-gr + e>, and è is ` e.

The compose key is much more flexible than that. You can use it for more than just accented characters (example: £ ¥ © ¹ ² ¼ « took me just a few seconds to type). There are many nice Unicode characters like “ ” — … → and so forth.

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anything close to it on Windows, whether built‐in or as an external program.
