GCL Wiki Questions and Answers
« on: July 02, 2009, 09:55:57 PM »
What's the deal?
In order to facilitate community involvement, Glitch City Laboratories is transitioning into a wiki format. A wiki is a website where users are allowed to edit collaboratively. Wikipedia is the best known wiki, although not the only one. Other wikis that users here may be familiar with are Bulbapedia, the Pokemon encyclopedia; and Sonic Retro, the comprehensive Sonic the Hedgehog database.

So it's Wikipedia for glitches?
Not exactly. Our policies differ in important aspects. Whereas Wikipedia disallows original research and requires that all statements be attributed to a "reliable third-party source," we encourage original research. Oh, and we don't have any pesky "notability" requirements, either. Any glitch, quirk, or trick in Pokemon that exists in the games can be documented here. We're even extending scope to non-Pokemon glitches.

What happens to the current site?
The wiki replaces the site we currently use. URLs that point to that site will be redirected to articles on the wiki. The Wiki "Main Page" will become GCL's home page.

How do I submit glitches to this wiki?
It's like creating a page on any other wiki. The same guidelines for making submissions will still be enforced, but validation will be done on the wiki, not on the forums. The "Submit a Glitch" boards will no longer be active.

Users submitting glitch pages will not be expected to follow the wiki's Manual of Style concerning page formatting, layout, terminology, etc. This can be fixed up by staff or another member. New pages are approved solely on factuality. Pictures can either be uploaded directly to the wiki or linked to from Imageshack or Photobucket or some such host.

Detailed information on creating new wiki pages will be provided once the wiki is public.

Approved? New pages have to be approved?
Yes. All new pages have to be approved by a staff member before they are "live" on the site. All edits to existing pages must also be approved. This is rather unusual for a wiki, but GCL does it so that it can safely certify that all information here is accurate.

These are glitches we're dealing with here. Incorrect procedure could crash or mess up a game. Therefore it is important to make sure all information is truthful.

What's happening to Submit a Glitch?
They are no longer in use. They exist solely so we can move verified submissions to the wiki. No new submissions will be accepted in Submit a Glitch.

When the SAG backlog is cleared, the SAG boards will be removed from the forum.

Who runs the wiki?
The administrators and moderators of Glitch City Laboratories Forums also administer the wiki. Additionally, some Members+ have a "QC" right that allows them to approve articles (but grants them no other administrative rights). Whereas new full staff members can only be added by an Administrator, "QC" users can be promoted by any staff member. Any Member+ is eligible for the QC right.

What's the sighted/approved/quality thing at the top of every article?
That's a rating system the quality checkers use to rate how well an article is compared to site standards.  If you see an article that is sighted or is too short, don't hesitate to try to improve upon the quality of the article.

What's with the skin? I don't like the background.
The background will be white before the wiki replaces the main site, and the various grays will be lightened up or darkened down depending on what looks better.

What's the status on the GlitchDex?
The GlitchDex is mostly complete. Some things still need to be worked on.

The other two Dexes?
They are also being worked on, following consensus to use "version:id" format designations for the other dexes.

What else?
Off the top of my head:
  • Proper looking main page
  • Stat changer and name generator tools
  • New Big List
  • The Gameshark code archive ported to wikitext
  • Of course, the massive SAG backlog

If you have any questions, please post them here and I'll add the answer to this post. Thank you.

Any time it says I'm using "Safari", I'm actually using my phone. Safari does not run on GNU/Linux and I do not use Safari.

What about Local Mods?
Since they usually moderate one or two boards, will they have the same permissions as higher-up mods, or do they have their own permissions?

"Or switch to a diferent skin" should be added to the skin section. It's what I did.

I haven't decided. At first I was going to give local mods the same rights as other members, but then I figured I'd give them the QC right.

I have a question: if a non-staff or administrator puts loads of stuff on the wiki that's all been aproved, will He/she eventually earn the ability to aprove? if not, why not?

I like it that way. Thanks.

Quite possible. Usually what happened under the old system is that big contributors earned the Valued Contributor rank, which is essentially equivalent to member+. This would probably include you in the "trusted users" category and you could be eligible for the QC right.

No, guest users are not able to edit under the current setup. It might change, though.

Forum and wiki accounts are tied together, so to get an account at the wiki you sign up for the forum.

Two things:

1.many articles I have seen include links to thinks like "M'"  that don't work because people have just been doing [M'] it seems that people dont know that to link it properly you have to put:[GlitchDex/RB:000|M'.]. just to remind people next time they edit or create new articles.

2.I'm trying to put some ocarina of time and majora's mask glitches up but the apostrophie is SOOOO anoying. how can I avoid this problem?

I don't see why we shouldn't keep the old boards around, for people to look at / discuss (which people are still doing now despite that they technically were going to be read-only). You may as well dump it into Pokemon Glitch Discussion / Video Games/Glitches Discussion when you're done, or at the very least its own dumpster section.
