Title: Forum Rules
Post by: Abwayax on March 26, 2006, 12:19:19 pm
We only have a few rules here:

That's really it. Use common sense, and you won't get banned. There are some other things you should know:

- We are not recruiting staff for the forums, website, or IRC channel. Do not ask for a staff position.  But if you must, go to profile > group management and request a group there.
- Swearing is allowed. Don't like it? Go (http://serebiiforums.com/) somewhere (http://pokecommunity.com) else (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net) then (http://www.marriland.com/forums). JUST TO CLARIFY: This does NOT mean that users HAVE to swear, or that they are not allowed to censor THEIR OWN posts.

We hope you enjoy your stay at Glitch City Laboratories Forums.

These rules are exceptional, unless your idiotic enough, don't really care about the rules, you shouldn't have any trouble following them, even I Papa Doc the wicked clown can follow them, so don't strain Abby!follow the rules and don't waste the staffs and admins time banning you, simple as that.

So don't do it, and keep your censor on. Regardless, most people shouldn't be swearing that much since excessive swearing would border on annoying.

Err if I'm guessing right (which I shouldn't be guessing :-/) It is not allowed.
Title: Re: Forum Rules

Is there a certain time when a thread is considered unable to be posted in then?  Maybe after the month it was last posted is past?
Title: Re: Forum Rules
Post by: Abwayax on July 27, 2007, 10:18:10 pm
I haven't made a rule about necroposting, as there are generally topics that are worth resurrecting, but in most cases it's generally frowned upon to post in a thread that is at least two months old.

I tried twice to make #glitchcity a PG-13 channel. The channel revolted against me. So it's not happening.

If enough people on the forums want it, they can make a separate, safe-for-work type channel. But unfortunately I can't do anything about #glitchcity. Geez, people whine if I make a decision, and people whine if I refrain from making one. I'm not sure where I messed up.

And truthfully, the fact that they talk about "mature" things in the channel should have nothing to do with whether or not they are your friends. If you don't want to listen to some guy's babbling about boobs or something, you can ignore them. I think most good IRC clients have an ignore feature; if the Java applet doesn't, you'd best get mIRC.

Or you can try to change the subject. That works sometimes.

I wouldn't think bumping old threads with a purpose would be bad. But if you're bumping the thread only to keep the thread active, it's spam.

(Yes, I'm saying this because I was bored and posted in many threads in Forum Games.)

We only have a few rules here:

  • Don't be stupid.
  • Keep it work safe.
  • Don't exploit loopholes. You should know what this means.
  • Make your posts legible and meaningful. We're not asking for anything college-level here, but please refrain from "net speak"/"AOL speak"/"txt speak". Also, posts consisting entirely of emoticons are not allowed.
  • Do not make multiple posts in a row in one thread. If there is something you need added to a post please use the "Modify" button instead.
    • Creative Movements and its sub-boards are exempt from this.
    • Role Plays is also exempt from this, but please do not do this in excess.
  • Do not post in topics that are over 4 months old, unless there is significant reason to do so.
    • Stickies, by their nature, cannot be "bumped" and thus are exempt from this rule.
    • In general "significant reason" means actual new content relevant to the topic, or recent news concerning said topic. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis by moderators and administrators.

That's really it. Use common sense, and you won't get banned. There are some other things you should know:

- We are not recruiting staff for the forums, website, or IRC channel. Do not ask for a staff position.
- Swearing is allowed. Don't like it? Go (http://serebiiforums.com/) somewhere (http://pokecommunity.com) else (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net) then (http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/forum/).

We only have a few rules here:

  • Don't be stupid.
  • Keep it work safe.
  • Don't exploit loopholes. You should know what this means.
  • We expect proper English from all members, with the exception of people who show an obvious difficulty in typing the English language. Do not use shortcuts or pointless abbreviations. "Pok?mon" is always "Pok?mon" ("Pokemon" is acceptable too) - never "pokes", "pkmn", or "pkm", for example. "to" is always "to", "too" is "too", never "2". "You" is "you", never "u". "People" is "people", never "ppl". Capitalize words that are supposed to be capitalized (anything in the beginning of a sentence and the pronoun "I"). "It takes too long to type" is NOT a valid excuse. If you don't want to spend time writing proper posts, do not post at all. Lazy people are always the first to go when the banhammer drops. In addition, please refrain from "net speak"/"AOL speak"/"txt speak". Also, posts consisting entirely of emoticons are not allowed.
    • Moderators are authorized to remind members to use proper English and may edit posts in order to prod users who do not.

    • In general "significant reason" means actual new content relevant to the topic, or recent news concerning said topic. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis by moderators and administrators.
  • Do not act rude towards users who make mistakes, particularly new users. See this (http://forums.glitchcity.info/index.php/topic,4646.0.html) for an explanation.

That's really it. Use common sense, and you won't get banned. There are some other things you should know:

There was discussion either in the exclusive board or in the admin/mod board that led back to this.

These rules actually allow us to edit peoples' posts to "prod" them to fix their grammar. I don't see us doing that, of course.

I believe that the preceding poster is a spammer.  Just look at his sig.
I think you should be nicer to our newer members.
I'm gonna have to side with Ketsuban on this one.
It could just be a ad because it's something he likes and he wants others to try it.

"Lulz" isn't leet per se, it's a variety of annoying 4chan-speak.

It also isn't a synonym for "luls". Lulz is specifically defined as enjoyment derived from the suffering of others, not just any enjoyment/laughter.

You can say lulz, just not +4|_|< |_1|<3 +|-|15.

4(+|_|4|_|_*/, */0|_| (4|\| 5|*34|< ||\| 1337.

^ translation: Actually, you can speak in 1337.

There's nothing in the rules that specifically forbid it, and GARY agrees that it is allowed. However, it would be rather exploitive of a loophole if you were to use it in every single post, and not for humour purposes.

As it is unreadable, it can count as spam, excepted by special cases that require your common sense.

It doesn't count as AOL speak/chat speak/txt speak as these are meant as quick typing for lazy people, and 1337 is definitely not lazy.

Agreed. Leet takes precision to type, a poorly typed leet sentence can royally confuse anybody, even those most fluent in leetspeak.

It looks like the "Bump" rule is missing?

Quote from: rules
8.Stickies, by their nature, cannot be "bumped" and thus are exempt from this rule.

Above it, it doesn't define "Bump"ing, which may make this a bit confusing.

Title: Re: Forum Rules

It used to be against the rules to post in a thread that had not been posted in at most one month. So if a thread's last post was in 2007 and you posted in it today, that would be a bump. It's called a bump because it moves the thread to the top of the thread index. It is sometimes referred to as necroposting (because it brings a dead thread back to life). On help forums, it's common for people to post a message consisting solely of the word "bump" to force it back to the top of the thread index. Stickies are always at the top of the thread index, so the rule did not apply to them.

I'm guessing that rule was removed following the reopening of the forums, as every thread on the forum was a couple years old at that point.

I kind of do.  I was only asking because I was re-reading the rules, and noticed that rule 8 was refering to a non-existant previous rule.

Rules were updated back in May to fix the COMPLETELY broken formatting it had and to remove the temporary rule about posting in topics before maintenance happened.  Seems two of the bumping rule points got removed somehow so I added them back.

I'm guessing that rule was removed following the reopening of the forums, as every thread on the forum was a couple years old at that point.

If you can put what the rule would be into one line, sure.  Currently I removed parts of the second footnote in response.

welp, truth be told you've got me there haha.

i'm more of the mind that if a given sentence is in actual english and it's legible, capitalization doesn't really matter. but yeah, i guess i should probably start using the shift key, though.

apparently not starting with this post. i dunno.

I think that the grammar rules are OK. For the correct capitalization part I am not sure if it's really needed, however, I think that correct capitalization helps to make our posts more readable and so should be encouraged personally.

I think that "For those new to English or those who are working to improve their grammar, an informative grammar guide is located here" may sound patronizing though, because people will have some knowledge to be able to read the posts here, and you cannot have one definitive informative grammar. It should probably be rephrased to something like "For people who want to improve their English, here are some small grammar tips".

This sounds much better to me as well. And we could recommend the English section of Stack Exchange (http://english.stackexchange.com/), which has helped me on more than one occasion (e.g.: when I wasn't sure if I should use "at", "on", or "in" for a given expression).
