Title: Pokemon Yellow "Save Abuse" Glitch
Post by: gnsquared on July 01, 2012, 02:03:46 pm
One of my viewers on YouTube emailed me about a glitch in Yellow version that involves shutting the game off while the game is saving. This was his original message:

Quote
How to start the glitch:
Start the game normally, select the preset "ASH" and "BLUE" names (this deals with binary data, I don't completely understand it)

Go downstairs, and stand near the exit (this is not required, but just makes it easier to finish faster)

Open the save menu, and go down to save, select YES.

Once the "YES NO" box disappears, there is about a 2 frame window to turn off the system and turn it back on.

When turned back on, if done correctly there will be a continue option and you will have an entire party full of glitched pokemon.

Switch pokemon #2 with the first pokmeon #10
Switch pokmeon #11 with pokemon #9.
This will switch binary data around and cause a glitch inventory to appear.

Open your item inventory, and scroll down, the cursor will get stuck halfway down and start flashing, hold down until it stops flashing. Press A

Continue scrolling down, and if scrolling down does not work, just press A. There will be an item with a glitched symbol then 6 for its number (this item will have a different name everytime) It should be below a MASTER BALL with x[  ]7 for it's amount.

Press SELECT and swith the item with a MASTER BALL that is below a GREAT BALL and above a glitch item.

Toss 68 of the item, this will alter the warp ID for your house door.

Exit the door, you win.

He accompanied this with two videos, one of the glitch being performed on an emulator, and another of him performing it on his actual GBA SP

Emulator video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-Sk61NKSYA

Him performing the glitch on his actual GameBoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo1cyUMDT9Q

However, try as I might I CANNOT get this to work on my game, and I also don't understand how the glitch works. The viewer who emailed me said he learned it from watching someone do it, so he couldn't link me to any web page that described how the glitch worked or why. Since you guys seem to be the place to go with Pokemon glitch info, I figured maybe you had heard of this before and could better explain it, or at least get it to work on your own games.

It's real. I once got the exploit to work on a physical cartridge. It doesn't work all of the time, and is frame specific. Some emulators freeze when you open the Pokémon menu. This is down to a bug, and doesn't happen on the real game.

From what I'm aware you mustn't have a save file. However, I'm unsure how true this is. If you have an existing save, try erasing it by holding Up+B+Select on the title screen.

The trick is to reset the game a little after the Yes/No box disappears, but before the "Would you like to SAVE the game?" message does.

Reset here:

(http://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj640/Torchickens/Saveexploit.png)

Either two things will happen, depending on the frame.

1) The save file is destroyed.
2) A lot of values in memory are replaced with '255'. This includes a number of important values, including the number of Pokémon, the attributes associated with those Pokémon, and the entire seen/own Pokédex data. Compare this to using a lot of Gameshark codes and setting '??' to 'FF'. This is basically what happens.

I've tried to explain this glitch in further detail here (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Talk:Second_type_glitch#How seeing #152 without cheating is possible in the English versions). Bulbapedia seems to be experiencing problems (at least for me) at the moment, but a few refreshes made the page load.

The person who Aaaboy97 is referring to is probably Gia257. He used the save exploit as part of a tool-assisted speedrun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool-assisted_speedrun) to beat the game in about two minutes. He submitted it to TASvideos.org, which is why you might see a lot of copies of the same video.

This is his original post (http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6856), and submission link (http://tasvideos.org/1958S.html). Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCAtPj32MOE)'s is a Youtube encoding of the original demonstration.

I recommend you download the actual VisualBoyAdvance movie from the submission link first and play the video slowly, since Gia aimed for the best time that was physically possible.

Since Gia257 submitted the video, somebody managed to obsolete it. Gia257 since found an improvement, which is the same method, but involved swapping a different set of memory addresses so that you don't even have to leave the room.

1337p4wn3r (http://tasvideos.org/1582M.html) later implemented these improvements to record a faster VBM, which has been encoded as a Youtube video by flygonbreloom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zFhVr-oMcU).

I'll keep trying, I think I might just end up using an emulator with slow down. Do you know if this is Yellow exclusive?

Also, thank you for the extremely detailed explanation (or links to it.)

Good luck.

I think it's possible in Red/Blue too, as TheZZAZZGlitch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFDu83NxUwo) did it. I haven't tested it on a real Red/Blue though.

Also, thank you for the extremely detailed explanation (or links to it.)

It's a pleasure!

I'll go ahead and test this out in either my Blue or Red version in a bit on my GBA and post the results. :) Expect this post to be edited. :V Edit: I kind of gave up since it's too tedious and I only got the "The Save File Is Destroyed!" message, or it saved with no corruption. :\ I might take a shot at it later, but it's pretty annoying. :V Edit2: Got it to work, though the frame I must have shut it off at only corrupted the pokemon data as my items were okay. BTW this was in Blue, I couldn't find my Red and I have a save on there I don't want to delete. :V

Oh my. I've got a Yellow cart in really bad condition that I've been attempting to glitch via corrupting saves, and this sounds like it would be just the ticket.

First attempt: Save data is destroyed.
Second attempt: It worked. Quite well, in fact.

I'll post a video once I get the item stuff sorted out.

Alright, here are a few things I've observed.

1. All of your Pokemon are Level 255 Qs  (http://glitchcity.info/wiki/index.php/GlitchDex/Y:255 (http://glitchcity.info/wiki/index.php/GlitchDex/Y:255)). Their name will appear as some amalgamation of 9s and background tiles, depending on which tileset you're using at the time, or may have the name of your rival (see #5).  They may be poisoned or have other statuses.
(http://i.imgur.com/J42V6l.jpg)
(http://i.imgur.com/WmtTRl.jpg)
(http://i.imgur.com/lzxlxl.jpg)
2. Some invisible items are TMs, and can be taught to your glitch Pokemon. For instance, one of my Qs learned Flash.
3. One Oak gives you the Pikachu, it's not visible or accessible in your party at all, as far as I know.
4. Your glitch Pokemon will either have no moves at all, or four TM55 moves (assuming you haven't taught it anything new).
***5. The game renames your rival.  In this case, my rival's name was "99999GARY", even though I had originally named him "Blue".  Upon resetting the game, I discovered that one of my glitch Pokemon was named "GARY".
(http://i.imgur.com/5VAI7l.jpg)

In battle, they behave like many other glitch Pokemon: they have statuses that don't show up, such as sleeping and burns.

Even without switching toe Pokemon around, the item system is messed up. For example. I withdrew the one Potion I had in my PC, and it promptly disappeared into thin air.

Sorry for the crappy photos; they were the best I could get at the time.  I'll keep researching, and I plan to see what happens at a Pokemon center.

As far as I know, most of the bytes are set to FF or 00 after the save abuse, hence the Q, TM55, character 9's, the - move, 255 or 0 stats, and 65535 HP, and most of your items are either CANCEL or the hex 00 ones.

Oh and the pokemon's experience are all 16777215 (2^24-1).

What I'm most interested in is the game's renaming of the rival. I wasn't aware it was possible to do that.

What can you choose for the rival's name?

e.g.
NEW NAME
BLUE
GARY
WHATEVER

Does the renaming occur as soon as you reset or after you switch Pokemon around?

I'm not sure, as I switched Pokemon before I went into Oak's lab. Maybe someone can do it after they meet the Rival?

There's something I can't figure out. I tried using a Rare Candy that was in my glitched inventory on one of my Qs. It grew to level 0, as is the norm with Level 255 Pokemon, but the palette in the room (Oak's lab) changed to blue, orange, and white, and the game crashed as soon as I exited the menu. Does anyone have any idea why a palette change would cause a crash?
This happened after I got Pikachu (which I still can't find in my party) and before the Rival battle.

First zillion attempts: "The save data is destroyed!"
Eventually: Pulled it off, team of glitchy Charizard's EVERYWHERE. They had TM55 in all four move slots with 63/0 PP, and did nothing. There was a Charizard 'M there, which fainted from Poison the instant I tried to attack. The battle with Blue was unwinnable and the level 255 Glitchizards had infinite HP. Many laughs were had at Blue's futile attempts at defeating them.

This was on Red, so it is possible, but I didn't get the glitched items. Guess I restarted on the wrong frame.

Considering Q's close links to Charizard 'M (ZZAZZ glitch), I would expect that. Good job on getting it to work.

Apparently there are 152 Pokémon in the PokéDex. I managed to locate the PokéDex in the glitchventory, and #152 is going to drive conspiracy theorists off the wall:
(http://i724.photobucket.com/albums/ww244/BertTheCapedIdiot/100_3511.jpg)

Delving deeper into the bowels of the Glitchventory, there is an item called Bf2 that plays a "cutscene", where a PokéBall is thrown at an invisible Pokémon, it wobbles four times, and it breaks out, revealing that the Pokémon is a cluster of tiles.

I came across an item called ???????, that said "You can't surf on ??????? here!", so I'm guessing this is the mysterious "surfboard" item. It appears to be gone now, strangely.

Defeating Gary while this glitch is active will result in the game freezing once the battle is over. Your character will become a glitch square. Using certain glitch items from the inventory in battle will result in random effects taking place. It's entirely possible that his 'Mon will suddenly gain a burn status condition and lose HP until it faints (it just did on my game).

There must be an EXP Share in my Glitchventory somewhere, because the rest of the Glitchmons in my party gain EXP when an enemy is defeated. Using the PokéDex will result in the battle screen becoming glitched.

Quite a doozy, this is. It'd be nice if there was a way past the game freeze once you beat Gary.

Edit: It's possible to "neutralize" the glitch Pokémon. The first Pokémon was apparently burned, so I used a Burn Heal on it, and used Rare Candies to raise it to level 5 and it's acting rather normal.

I fucked up my game something terrible.

I switched the third Pokemon in my party with the first (after glitching the inventory) and saved the game. Now I can't do anything without a series of glitches. When I talk to Oak, characters and tiles appear on the screen without a text box. When I look at the book in Oak's lab, some hilarious stuff, much the same as Oak's result, occurs. When I try to exit, the game does a glitchy-noise lockup at the moment when it tries to display the exclamation point over Rival's head.

But I can look at Oak's computer! That's good...right?

My point is that switching s**t around CAN screw this up really badly. Odds are I'll have to retry the save glitch.

Video coming soon.

I have one more thing to add: DO NOT use Rare Candies unless you're prepared to deal with a VERY glitchy environment. If the Rare Candy has a glitched item number, it changes the palette and then causes a crash, which I described before. If it appears to be normal, your Q will level up to 0, but when I tried it, it completely redefined the boundaries in Oak's lab. I somehow walked through the eastern wall and caused a crash, and NPCs and objects were outside the normal boundaries of the screen.

I see we've stumbled upon Pokemon #152 that appears when the last bit for the Pokedex becomes set.

There are more past 152 all the way up to 255/000.

A list of them can be found in this post (http://forums.glitchcity.info/index.php/topic,982.msg20572.html#msg20572) and the text document attached.  Koolboyman documented all up until 216 because a byte in the RAM before all the flags controls how far the game can scroll down.  I accidentally found this out when setting values to FF to force more Pokemon in the Pokedex which allowed me to also havbe complete control over scrolling.  When I did get it to scroll past 216, I documented 217-000. (255 loops back around to 000 but once 000 goes off screen you can't scroll back up.)

Enjoy.

Oh lordy lordy, I managed to disable the doors so I can't even go inside buildings.

It seems like there are nigh-infinite amount of Glitchmons in the party, and after a point, they just become Charizard 'M (at least on mine).

The "Surfboard" item I mentioned earlier is fully usable. However, the Glitchventory is very unstable, and it disappeared after I tested it before freezing the game. Interestingly, the Glitchventory seems to loop.

Switching Pokémon around can result in the colours radically changing, usually giving it a sense of inversion. The game freezes once you exit the menu.

Edit: Constantly switching Glitchmons around seems to alter the Glitchventory in some ways. This is the only reason I found ???????/Surfboard.

Personaly, I am going to test it too(reading you all talking about what happened, it makes me want to do it!), when I will get another Yellow, so probably a french version. Mine is too precious to be "destroyed" this way...

But, tell me, if after having fun with this glitch, if you erase the save (select down B, if I don't mistake), does the game come back to a normal behaviour?

And... Up to now I though that any gameboy or DS game had up to 3 kind of "memories":
1)the data about the world, the normal behaviour,all the people,the things... What is going to be used while a game. It is what exist at the very beginning of a game's life,when you just open your Christmas gift! This one can't be changed but with opening the box and use very special machines. In the game(by normal use,when the box is in the gameboy), there is no way to change it
2)the save file that contains all the informations such as the position of the character when he saved, which people has been defeated, all what is in the bag, where is the character regarding the story,... This can be unique(in pokémon game it is always the case),but some games have 2 or 3 save slots(zelda, Final fantasy,mario....) an can be erased with a menu,or with saving  wrongly... And if it is possible to save wrongly, there is a risk that the games continues and that there are problems(such as in Gold Silver: how to begin with the 3 pokémon form the professor,or in Crystal: how to have a blue boy or a red girl as character)
3)the quicksave file that erase as soon as you open it, or when you refuse to use it in the main menu.

All that is what I though logically, but regarding your glitches, I'm certainly mistaking...

Yep. (Select Up B)

So I decided to try this out on Yellow version instead of Red, and oh boy, what a trainwreck. The entire overworld is a mess, I can't even go back to my house since there's building roofs everywhere. The barricade in front of that grass patch beside Pallet (you know the one) is gone. Stepping into this grass freezes the game...how sad.

Beating Gary results in the game freezing, but you can attempt to talk to him, resulting in a "9 1 ERROR" message popping up and the music changing to the Rocket Hideout music. The space between the 9 and 1 will often have a random letter or tile in it (such as 9N1 error). Picture's at a reasonable size this time!

Okay! Big news.

You CAN get out of Oak's lab and into everywhere else (at least you can in Yellow).

I was fiddling around with moving Pokemon in my party, and went through the normal cycle of glitchy talk and item descriptions.  Somehow, I made Rival disappear in the process.  When I tried to exit the lab (the point where Rival talks to you and initiates the battle), the game thought that I was talking to the Nurse at a Pokemon Center. I had my Pokemon healed with the "glitchy tiles" method, similar to what happens if you try to heal Pokemon without any in your party, and I was able to exit the lab without a problem after that.

I ended up having to run from most wild Pokemon battles due to the "dual ailment" for my Qs, which I described before. Otherwise, the game is perfectly normal.

So yes, it can be done, and it's a lot more mundane than you think. But this was simply coincidence, and a very odd result of a glitch.
Title: Re: Pokemon Yellow "Save Abuse" Glitch
Post by: MrGlitch on August 16, 2012, 03:28:08 pm
...Aaaaand now I've got a completely different inventory.

I got a ????? item as well. The first time I tried using it, it gave me a message saying, "No SURFing on ????? here!" Like whoever else discovered it, I think it's the Surfboard. The next time I tried to use it, Oak told me not to.

Evidently, using a Cascadebadge results in Ash throwing bait and switching around NPC sprites.

I've also deposited a few glitches into a Box, after catching a Spearow, and now my first Pokemon is a " ( h 4 to 89". It's level 255, Normal type, #202, all TM55 attacks, a Rhydon's cry, and, of course, it's poisoned.

Healing Qs or other glitched Pokemon in this case results in a game crash as soon as the dialogue with the nurse at the Pokemon Center is finished.
Title: Re: Pokemon Yellow "Save Abuse" Glitch
Post by: camper on August 16, 2012, 11:43:06 pm
I'm pretty sure that if you withdraw a Pokemon from the PC Box and don't put Q in the first slot of your party, the healing will be fine and crash-proof.

If you keep scrolling upwards when you're switching Pokémon around, the arrow will eventually be on the right-hand side of the screen instead of the left.

You can trigger encounters with Glitchmons if you switch around enough times. It'll usually be a hooked Glitchmon and the game could freeze, as well as being over level 100.

You can also make some rather silly things happen, like one of the PokéDex's on Oak's desk being replaced by the player and the NPC. The game will probably freeze though.

Judging by the posts Torchickens linked to, the corruption of items is CAUSED by switching the Pokemon in your party around, so if you don't do that part you won't get the item overflow.

Edit: Read the post carefully, you're messing with the RAM when you switch stuff around like that. If you read the post you'll learn more about how to control the results.

EDIT 2: NO SERIOUSLY GUYS READ THAT STUFF. It will explain why switching your Pokemon has such an effect on the game, why the rival's name keeps changing, etc etc.

Post by: MrGlitch on August 17, 2012, 04:33:49 pm
As seems to be the norm, I've run into a problem.

Earlier I described how I evaded the battle with Rival via a coincidental Pokemon Center script.  Unfortunately, this is a disadvantage now.

I'm trying to get past the Old Man, and have Oak's Parcel. However, when I entered the lab, Oak said, "Hey! Don't go away yet!", and when I talked to him, he rated my Pokedex. In other words, the game won't let me leave the lab because I never battled my rival, and even if I were allowed to leave, I couldn't get any farther on the map because I couldn't get past the Old Man.

Luckily, I didn't save inside Oak's lab.

Also, the game has renamed my rival AGAIN. Now his name is Blue. Make up your damn mind, game.  Actually, I think the game changes his name depending on the order of the Pokemon in your party.

When I scroll up in my party, I find (among other things) a Nidoqueen with no attacks and two 3TrainerPokes.  More info to come.

I've been having so much fun with this glitch. I've mainly been fooling around with the order of Pokemon in the party and the healing system, but the glitch item aspect is quite fascinating.

I've found five glitch items so far that do exactly the same thing: throw a Poke Ball infinitely at a non-existent Pokemon.

One item is amusing: []t[][]. It initially functions as a potion-like item, but if you try to use it on a Pokemon that is fully healed, your sprite in the overworld disappears, and if you had talked to an NPC directly beforehand, a clipping effect is activated that allows you to walk through a single wall (though once I was able to walk until I hit the void).

Notably, the glitch inventory seems to change every time you enter a new map; it seems that about half of the spaces in the bag are changable and warp themselves when you go to a new place. This allows for infinite possibilities with glitch items.

When you turn off the game as it’s saving at that exact optimal moment, the data for how many Pokemon you have in your party becomes corrupted, which is why you are now carrying over six Pokemon with no names or data. When you switch the 2nd glitch Pokemon in your party with the 10th, the byte that holds the amount of items you have is changed, and your bag can now access much more memory than it’s supposed to. This is why when you check your bag, you’ll be carrying so many glitch items and items that you haven’t actually obtained, like the master ball, gold teeth, and so on. These items actually represent the different variables in your save data, your x-y coordinates, your rivals name, your trainer ID, and the data for the warp of the room you’re in. So when you switch your Pokemon and items around, you're accessing and changing different bytes in the game, and editing different variables.

I've got an idea: it's a bit harder, but has someone tried to do it at least after receiving the pokedex? The real problem is that if "the save is corrupted!", you'll have to do it again. But it will maybe allow you to go further and easier. Or maybe not, if the game is in such a mess, maybe the events you already have done (receiving your first pokémon, giving the pack to prof Oak,...) are reset... Is it possible to end up in a total different place than where you saved?

Unfortunately I haven't found yet a new yellow... So I just watch your results

Hey, what a mess it should be to do it with a japanese one and use the select glitch!!

By constantly switching Pokémon around, yes. You'll probably be stuck in an invisible box and unable to go anywhere, though.

In this case, the verb warp would mean "to be taken from one place to another almost instantaneously (in an instant)" and the noun would mean "An event or object that warps objects from place to place"

Excuse me. I am new and I was curious... I don't have Pokemon Yellow, but I do have Pokemon Blue... Will the Save Abuse Glitch work on Pokemon Blue? Thanks in advance! :)

Never mind guys. I tried it and it worked FLAWLESSLY! Technically it worked like chaos but that's a good thing, right? I made a HUGE discovery! Here's how to do the cool thing:

1. Switch Pokemon #1 with Pokemon #2

2. Switch the Pokemon that is now #1 with Pokemon #6

3. Switch Pokemon #6 with Pokemon #10

4. Switch Pokemon #10 with Pokemon #11

5. Switch Pokemon #11 with Pokemon #1

6. Go to 'Item' and scroll down until the cursor stops flashing. Press A

7. Leave house then find some Rare Candies

8. Use Rare Candies on the first Pokemon.

9. Walk in grass and end up in lab

10. Use burn heal and pick Charmander (recommended)

11. Battle rival. The game should do a series of glitches once you win battle. Keep the down arrow held down and simultaneously press B. If done correctly, after about 10 minutes, you will have finally escaped Oaks lab!

*Do not use Burn Heal before you enter the lab. You will get stuck in the door.

*Once out, you can save and continue on your way!

*Upon entering the lab with the Parcel, Oak will tell you not to leave, causing you to be stuck. I am still trying to find a way to skip the Old Man. I will advise you with any more discoveries.

Happy glitching! :)

For four glorious seconds I actually had the Crystal Onix.

I was digging through my team to see what I had and found a glitch Onix, Blastoise, Golduck, Scyther, and Farfetch'd, among others. I placed Onix at the top of my party and raised it to level 5 and taught it Strength since it had no moves.

I don't remember what I did but I actually got Onix's back sprite to appear in the battle with Gary.

And it was a rather peculiar shade of blue.

Either way, this was just a pallete error and I'm trying to get it again, so I can take a picture of it and tell a bunch of second graders it exists.

Lol! Good times... Getting past the lab isn't much fun... Every time you try to give Oak his Parcel, he acts as if you didn't get a Pokemon. There is only 1 Poke Ball and when you click on it, it says it's Prof. Oak's last Pokemon... I'M STUCK IN VIRIDIAN CITY!!!!! I make a huge discovery and now I can't progress..... :'(

I had to start a new game because of this.  Oddly enough, I've tried glitching it during saving again, and it's given me a "continue" option with no glitch effects.

Yeah... I really don't know what I should do... It was such a pain to get out of the lab, though, I really don't want to restart my game... Maybe I can find an item or some glitch to walk through the trees... I don't know...

Hey everyone! Big news! I got past the Old Man without delivering the Parcel! I turned on my game, swapped a couple of Pokemon around (they were awesome like Snorlax Lv. 255, Jynx Lv. 255, ect.), then I couldn't go in doors, I would only walk on them... So I went to Route 1, hoping it would fix the problem, but it was Glitch City CHAOS! I couldn't move from the 2nd step on Route 1. I looked at Charizard 'M's stats, and everything was normal! I looked at my items, and I found a (glitch)G(glitch) item. I clicked on it, and then I got out of it. The strange thing was that ALL NPC's had disappeared and my Pokemon were still on the overworld! So I walked past the Old Man, checked Charizard 'M's stats, saved, and now I'm heading for Viridian Forest. When I get Fly (which my Lv. 5 Lapras knows :P), so I should say the Thunderbadge, I will be in the clear!

Ok! Still adrenaline pumped! I am now in Fuchsia City (I skipped Cerulean, Pewter, Lavender, Saffron, and Celadon :P), no badges because every time I fight a Trainer, when I win (I don't know about losing since nobody has defeated a team of trillions of glitch Pokemon), I end up in a completely black overworld. I can't move (I only turn direction), can't open the start menu, forcing me to reset. I don't know what I am going to do when it comes time for the Pokemon League... Oh well... Surly I'll find SOME WAY to beat the game! *knock on wood* Also, I can't do the MissingNo. glitch because I haven't delivered the Parcel because if I do, I will be trapped in Oaks Lab... :'( OH! I STILL HAVE THE MEW/DITTO GLITCH! But since I can't use Fly due to the (stupid) "Black Abyss", I will have to use Teleport... It will be kind of hard, but it will be well worth it! :D

*hint* As you can't fight a trainer, you have to faint yourself to get the START menu to work...
And I think Teleport also makes you end up in the void/glitch cave.

That's a problem I've run into with hex edits. Even with WTW codes on, they give you the "You can't go through here" message; that is, you can't walk through them like you can with other NPCs.

Getting around places with this glitch seems to entirely rely on "move some Pokemanz around and hope you make whatever's blocking your progress disappear without freezing your game".

I can't seem to get my Glitch Onix to become blue again, so I guess I can't lie to second graders about the Crystal Onix.

I'm free! (I randomly did all of this so don't think I got this off of the Internet) I went into Vermilion City Pokemon Center, and I did the warp ID thingumajig. The warp ID's had changed, so I threw away 37 of the item that changes the warp ID. When I exited the door, I was in a Pokemon Center. I then threw away 32 more of the item, then exited. Once I exited, I ended up in the room in the Pokemon League where you battle Gary (in this case Ash). Since I automatically was warped in there, the game didn't walk my player up to Ash, so I walked out of the door behind him, and I won. The reason I didn't do this in the beginning was because of two reasons. In the beginning, I had "captured" 152 Pokemon, causing the game to freeze once Professor Oak evaluated my Pokedex. Also because I wanted to play around with the glitch. The reason I tried in Vermilion City was because I switched some Pokemon (then saved) and the Pokedex said I had caught 64 Pokemon, so I tried to experiment because I figured the game wouldn't freeze, and I was right! Thank you everyone who helped me along my adventure! However, I am still going to play my game with the glitch. Does anyone know who found this glitch? Whoever did, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Also does it work in Pokemon Silver? Thanks in advance! Happy glitching! :D

I don't think it would work in Pokemon GSC, but you could try. However if the mechanics for saving are the same as RGBY, then it most likely could occur. Many Error Traps were created in the second Gen games. But i'm going to try in a crystal version ROM real quick to see if anything happens. Expect this post to be edited. :V Edit: It won't happen, because the only options you have when the game first starts is your pack, [player name], save, options, and exit. Looks like they knew about the glitch or they decided to change that feature. :V Also your items don't glitch out, unless if i'm resetting too late, but even then the game won't even save any tiny bit of data... Looks like this glitch is fixed in Gen 2. And this works in Green and japanese Red, so it's been present inside the game even back that far. :V

I restarted/erased my save file today in order to start this glitch all over. I waited until I'd completed the Gary battle to perform the save trick, so when I restarted, there were no freezes. I got Oak's Parcel and delivered it to him.

At the lab, I swapped GP#2 with #11, warping my items. I used the "Pokedex" item, which had 152 Pokemon caught on it. This gave my actual Pokedex 152 caught, so I chatted with Oak about it; but judging by his response - "[][]8B[] []3[]iV[]error" or similar - he wasn't thrilled about the whole affair. How rude.

Pikachu has totally vanished, which, I suppose, is to be expected, given that he has been warped beyond recognition into...well...255.

I went outside and messed around with some clipping items; "[]o[][]" and "JOHN" both worked equally well for this purpose. I made my way to Viridian and passed north, where I paused before the Forest entrance. There, I selected the item two slots below the first Master Ball, and I swapped it with the item two slots below that (this item was HM05; I can't remember the other).

This totally warped my map, and turned the whole place green. I, the player, turned ghost-white, with dark blue garments. As it turned out, I had been transported a short distance north, so I was steps away from Pewter City. I walked there, and the screen became grey. The start screen became entirely white, which made item-pack navigation impossible; though Pokedex, party and saving access was straight-forward enough.

No warp tiles functioned correctly. I saved and restarted my game, but this, unfortunately, did not reset the map or the ridiculous colour scheme.

The boy who leads the player to Pewter Gym worked normally, although as the warped map is technically two tiles off of what it ought to be (when a battle is triggered, it is possible to momentarily see your 'proper' co-ordinates): this means that one can walk just outside of the boy's range, as he is standing on the side of a rock.

And that leads us to where I am now: immediately east of Pewter City. I currently face a dilemma from which I fear there is no escape; this glitch map is so different from the actual game, and I don't believe that my file will ever be restored to its original dynamic.

However, that is not the biggest problem at present - I cannot pass the way of three trainers whom I must battle in order to proceed through the game. I cannot use my clipping items to skip them due to the fact that my bag is invisible as per the colouration.

My lead Pokemon is a Q who knows only TM55 x4, which makes it impossible for him to attack. I must find a Pokemon deep in my inventory who can fight for me, but switching one to the front often causes crashing after the start menu is closed. I am also quite sure that simply allowing my opponents to Struggle after a prolonged fight is not an option either, because R/B/Y trainers don't depend on PP.

This will take some time...

I've tried multiple times to do this glitch again, and it simply doesn't work. Either the file data is destroyed or it won't let me access my party.

Also, I can see why they put the "SAVING...DON'T TURN OFF THE POWER." warning in G2 games!

I might try a few glitches through switching the Pokemans around as a means of NCP controlling etc maybe we could figure out a system and know exactly what combination is needed for each unpassable NCP.

Highly Unlikely that there'll be one set method though, >_<

I restarted my Silver last week and have had no luck... Maybe we can do a glitch after we had already saved and after we have a Pokemon... I will try this right now. Let us hope it works... It might not work considering that I already have a Pokemon, but I don't know why that would affect the glitch... Wish me luck! :)

I finally got this to work myself, except for one thing.

So as soon as I load the corrupted save file, I switched the 2nd Pokemon with the 10th. Then looking at my items, I switched the item under the Master Ball with the Iron in my bag. According to the sites Torchickens linked me to, this should change the warp to a corrupted version of the HoF room. Well, rather than that, it changed it to a corrupted version of Pokemon Tower. Groooooannnnn...

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! I follow every step in the video EXACTLY, perfectly, but it never turns out right. The Glitchy item in my bag for some reason is called something different than it is in the video every time too :/

Are you referring to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zFhVr-oMcU) video?

The Glitchy item in my bag for some reason is called something different than it is in the video every time too :/

I think this is the problem. The glitchy item needs to be item $76 (118) [(http://i.imgur.com/Dy3c1.png)], otherwise you'll end up somewhere different after you switch it with the Iron.

The item under the Master Ball is the 31st 'item' in your bag. It reads both bytes of the player's Trainer ID. The player's Trainer ID is stored in two bytes at D359 and D35A (https://bitbucket.org/iimarckus/pokered/src/4b28ddb11f38/constants.asm). In p4wn3r's TAS, luck manipulation was used to make the Trainer ID 30394. If you convert this to hexadecimal, you get bytes $76 (D359) and $BA (D35A) respectively. $76 is the item, and $BA (dec: 186) is the quantity.

(Item 31 reads D359, D35A [Trainer ID] ):

(http://i.imgur.com/2aRQk.png)

In the video, p4wn3r wanted to place the value $76 into the 75th 'item'. This reads D3B1 and D3B2. D3B1 seems to change where the door takes you. When you're first placed into your room D3B1 must always be $25 (Iron), because $25 (dec: 35) is the map number (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_locations_by_index_number_(Generation_I)) of the first floor of your house.

(Item 75 reads D3B1 [Destination Map] and D3B2 [?] ):

(http://i.imgur.com/3draT.png)

Notice that $76 (118) is the location ID of the Hall of Fame (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_locations_by_index_number_(Generation_I)). In your save, when you were viewing this item, you probably had a Trainer ID number ranging between 36352 (8E, 00) and 38143 (94, FF) because maps $8E (142) - $94 (148) are different floors of Pokémon Tower.

It seems that although this method is fast, you have to be lucky, as your Trainer ID must range between 30208 (76, 00) and 30463 (76, FF) so you've got a 1/256 chance of being warped to the Hall of Fame. Lance's Elite Four ($71) room might also work with Trainer IDs between 28928 (71,00) and 29183 (71,FF) .

Here's a way to keep track of where the cursor is and what addresses they change:

We know the 'item' under the Master Ball is the 31st item in your bag.

You can verify this with a memory viewer.

Highlight the item with the select button, and then look up RAM: CC35 (which item is being selected, 00 means that the select button isn't on any item). It should be $1F, which you can convert to decimal to get 31.

(http://i.imgur.com/dN6gk.png)

After counting or highlighting the item and checking CC35, you can find the item address like this:

Item Address = D31C + ($CC35) + (($CC35) - 1)
                      = D31C + 1F + 1E
                      = D359

The quantity address is adjacent to the item address, so it must be D35A.

These happen to be addresses that determine the player ID.

To check that it's right, you can open memory viewer and search the WRAM for D359 and D35A. It says we're looking at glitch item $76 with a quantity of $BA (186).

(http://i.imgur.com/TVHzH.png)

If you enter the Gameshark code 017659D3 (first byte of Trainer ID is "$76") and disable it after you are placed in your room, then try the glitch, walking through the door should always take you to the Hall of Fame. You might have to save and switch emulators to an emulator like BGB. Some versions of VBA seem to have a bug where disabling a code reverts it back to the previous value.

I hope this helps.

I've long since restarted my game with the permanent negative colours, but interesting things have been going on in my new game. I'm currently in Viridian City.

In Pallet, I switched the 3rd Pokemon with the 36th. After I closed the party, the "Pokedex" option suddenly appeared above "Pokemon". (The Pokedex included all 152, of course.) I was then able to travel north without Oak bugging me about being attacked.

I found a Pokemon in the party that was able to change your co-ordinates, but I forget which one. I found out that discarding the item two slots below the first Master Ball changes the colour of the screen with no freezing (unless you toss the last one). Switching the 21st causes the text of NPCs/signs, etc. to glitch up and an 8 to appear north-east of you.

Fresh from my subscriptions is this video of a guy TASing the HoF glitch in Blue. Might just be a world record! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6300mPfGInE&feature=g-u-u

Well, this is...interesting.

I tried it about a week ago, and it gave me the "file data is destroyed" message.  Now that I've tried it again, I'm in the exact spot where you start the game, and I have the Pikachu from the file that was supposedly destroyed!! In other words, the game has combined two files.

Not sure how this happened, but I still can't get the damned glitch to work right.

Oak was able to give me a Pikachu, so now I have a Pikatwo. One with the normal cry and one with the specialized cry.

WARNING: My Pikachu's name may be considered offensive.

Switch the Pokemon two slots above the first Pokemon with the fifth Pokemon, and wall tiles will instantly 'de-wall' themselves.

The colors in the game suddenly turned dark blue, black, and very little white ( I now look like a girl with long, flowing, black hair! :P )! So... The menus are only blue boxes, and the color is now that permanently! Stupid me, trying to have fun, accidentally clicked "Save" while I was stuck in some trees, and now I can't escape! I will try to post a picture of my situation, but since I'm on a 3DS, I don't know if it'll work... Also! I even have a video of me in a glitch world, and when I get done surfing, I hear this strange, beautiful, music! Hey man, there's an edit button for a reason.  I know you're new, but PLEASE use it next time, otherwise I won't be so lenient about double or in your case quadruple posting.

Also, might I suggest putting a magnifying glass up to your screen or camera lens.  The quality of those shots would be improved by it as I can't tell too much on what I'm looking at.

Don't delete your save, that glitch music would be well appreciated if it was recorded.  I suggest using a 3.5MM Headphone to 3.5MM Headphone Male/Male connector and inserting it into your headphone out and plugging the other end into either LINE IN or MIC on your computer.  Line in is preferred but most laptops don't have it.

After this is done, download audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) and then record from either line in or microphone.  Save and output as anything but a project file and attach it here.

Hey, Photon-Phoenix! Sorry about the quadruple posting... Since I'm on a 3DS, and I don't have a computer, can I somehow post a video on here? If I can find a way out of the sea of trees, and if I can SOMEHOW fix my color pallet, then I can do that music again... I could do the music again with the wrong color, but I don't want to end up saving in there... Wait... I AM SAVED IN THE ROUTE 1 GLITCH WORLD!!! Ugh... I'll experiment... Hopefully I can find a way out of this... Hopefully..... Thanks! :)

I actually managed to get out of Pallet Town and into Viridian City.

So I decide that I don't want all these Glitchmons hanging around my party, so I decide to deposit some.

Instead, my game freezes and the file is erased.

It's not fair, dammnit. It's not fair.

Yeah, make sure to save once you've done something that isn't easily replicable.

Also, depositing the glitchémons is utterly futile, given that there seems to be thousands of them. (I went to 'deposit Pokemon' and got my phone to automatically scroll down through the list. Almost an hour later, it was still scrolling, and I've never seen the end of them.)

Actually, when I chose the Glitchmon to deposit, the game reset and my file was gone. I simply clicked on it, and that happened.

I mean, yeah, I'm sure it sucks, but that's a hell of an overreaction, Mr. Glitchmon.

Sorry for the double post but.

I BEAT THE GAME.

Managed to figure out a way to walk through walls (someone said to move the Glitchmon 2 spaces above the first Pokemon with the fifth Glitchmon) and went to the League. Instead of going into the building, I went "around" it, through a bunch of glitch tiles and eventually would up at the Indigo Plateau.

I didn't even bother fighting anyone, instead I exploited the WTW glitch and went straight to the Hall of Fame Room.

The game only acknowledged the first four Glitchmons, which were an Alakazam, an Arcanine, and two random glitch things. The game carried on as normal.
Title: Re: Pokemon Yellow "Save Abuse" Glitch
Post by: VaeporSage on November 12, 2012, 11:46:03 am
'Twas I who discovered that WTW quirk.

I've tried to use it to get through the Elite Four, but I can never manage to get by Lance for some reason. My secondary concern is that on entering my Rival's room, I'll be forced to battle with him, WTW or no WTW.

The manipulation of items to alter warps is still far more effective, if you can copy how it is done on tutorial videos.

~~~
Messing with the Day Care south of Cerulean is interesting, but most glitchmons crash the game when given.
After depositing the first Pokemon, taking it out, doing the same with the one after (which is now in the top slot), and then doing the same with the third, I walked two steps south, and back again to the Day Care man.
Suddenly, I was flown to a glitched landscape where I could only travel east. There was nothing to do there, and the game, of course, crashed after a sizable period of east-travelling.
This episode was worthless, but it illustrated to me that the Day Care may have very intriguing effects on the game. This should be investigated in a little bit more detail.  :D
The day-care stablizes any Pokemon you put into (even if those are not even Pokemon!). Is this the cause of the effects?
'Twas I who discovered that WTW quirk.
I've tried to use it to get through the Elite Four, but I can never manage to get by Lance for some reason. My secondary concern is that on entering my Rival's room, I'll be forced to battle with him, WTW or no WTW.
When you're in Lance's room, approach one of the statues in front of the door that leads to your rival's room. You should be behind him, and the battle won't be triggered. Go through the door as normal, and walk on the statues; this stops the battle with your rival from starting. Then, go into the Hall of Fame room.
Due to the shuffling of bytes presumably from changing the order of the party pokemon, which of course past the 6th slot represent other data (assuming past the 6th slot is accessible).
Two discoveries:
By switching the third Pokemon with the thirty-sixth immediately after corrupting the save, I was told that my Safari game was over. I paid to get "back" in, and swapped those two Pokemon again. This disabled the step count (500/500) and allowed me to walk around for as long as I liked.
There's good reason to think that this would work similarly with Repels and other in-game concepts founded on the step count.
More significantly, I also discovered that if there is a non-glitched Pokemon in the PC, it is perfectly possible to deposit as many glitched Pokemon as you want.
I cannot test this any further at the moment, because the map messed up after I deposited the item ????? (surfboard) into my item box. My phone's emulator was in a kind of automatic save mode at the time, so that particular file of mine is in a permanent crash state now.
I'd just like to emphasize that the glitch is considerably harder to do on R/B than on Yellow. The 2-frame pause is almost nonexistent on my copy of Red.
So I'm trying this on my (physical) Blue version. Took me about five times to get the file data is destroyed. I'm about to try again.
Okay I just tried three more times. Still no glitch. I suck at timing.
It took me a bit to finally get this to work in my physical copy of Red as well as various different ROMs. (Note this glitch works in Green and Red as well as all other foreign language versions too.) I couldn't tell you when the best time is to turn off your gameboy (or reset the game) but just keep trying it does work. I like this glitch, it's interesting to see that the save file is fine though it corrupts tons of other data instead.
Ha I did it!
(sry for Low Quality)
Its on my Yellow Cardridge.
Edit:
#1
Found HM03-teach it to Q- try to Battle BLUE. Kill his Eevee.
He sends out 3Poke..game Crashed.
#2
Try to Switch to a Pokemon with moves... Game turns darkgreen and Crashed soon.
#3 Switch Pokemon arround.
Sprites Vanished, but still musst fight BLUE.
Sends out Eevee. Game Crash.
#4
Found some Burnheal to avoid the TMTRAINER effekt.
Battle BLUE again... changed his name to 999999999!
My Name blanked out. After the Battle, BLUE stand there an if I try to talked to him, hes got a 1 9 Error!
Cant move after all. I supose the Game is thinking, that I still in talk with him.
Crap..restart
#5
Managed to find the Surfboard... and Surf on it to never see Oak!! Haha.
And I used some Rarecandys to get my first Q to a level, on wich he obey me.
Teach him surf, so that he can battle.
Battles are Glitched aswell. Try to cpature some (redcoloured) Tentacool...game claims that I caught a Magmotar... In water? WTH man?
But the Game ist still working after a wild Battle. Trainersprites an Randomized.
But a question. Ist it actially possible to fight Blue without the game is crashed after it?
Sorry if this is kinda bumping, but I found some WEIRD effects!
First of all, I switched some random Pokemon around and got the NPCs to go random places.
Second, this happened when I switched around other Pokemon:
(http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/8569/81cbc69e6f3f4db7acd8692.png)
THEN I MADE THE WHOLE SCREEN GREEN?!
(http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/9121/926414b7adbd46dd9a51814.png)
Then the game froze after I closed the start menu!
The game has been going /really/ slow now, like it takes 30 seconds for a word to show up.
Okay, now the "YOUR SAFARI GAME IS OVER" Thing came up, I wonder..
Oh great, glitch city.
Anyways, I reset and switched some more random Pokemon around and the "HEY WAIT DON'T GO OUT!" Message appeared and Oak just appeared for a split second and then the game locked up.
When I moonwalked (Yes, moonwalked.) Into the glitched up grass, Oak did the whole message, but it was in glitchy text.
I made the whole thing green again by switching Pokemon..
Unknown opcode, I better try again later.
More crap!
(http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/6329/72983033a6914694875854d.png)
This happened, it's quite funny.
This happens just about every time the screen color changes. Not totally sure why, though.
I managed to walk around with a different color scheme once. It was pretty neat, everything was inverted.
That 'sad tune' is the tune that plays when you play the Poké Flute. It's used as Q's cry.
Thanks for informing me, I couldn't recall what it was at the time :)
and, about the name change, I was just repeatedly scrolling up, and suddenly the music stopped, so I pushed "B", and the name had changed to ASHQJAC, and there were a couple of Qs in the map too; however when leaving the house all was fine with the map again.
Obviously something happened with RAM when scrolling up; something to do with 0x90 (decimal 144), but why the string terminator 0x50 in the name got replaced with 0x90, I do not know.
Evidently, using a Cascadebadge results in Ash throwing bait and switching around NPC sprites.
Apparently when I first posted this, I didn't recognize that the Cascadebadge is not supposed to be a usable item! Evidently it was supposed to be at one point (maybe for the HoF, when you have to show the guards a badge to get through?), but it clearly isn't in the final game.
Along with the Surfboard, NINTEN/SONY, and others, it's pretty cool how much stuff hidden in the ROM is exposed via glitching and hacking.
The badge items are actually used in the game. When you talk to the badge guy in Cerulean, he provides a list of badges that you can ask about. Internally, the list is constructed in a similar way to a Mart list: by giving item IDs and letting the game engine print the item names. The items used here are, of course, the mysterious badge items.
Also, the specified Master Ball item just does not want to show up in my copy...
So it seems that on Yellow version you can trigger a battle with a MissingNo. and you don't even have to move.
In your party, scroll upwards until your cursor appears on the right side of the screen. Move some Glitchmons around on this side and exit the menu. When you exit the menu, the battle will be triggered. The game will probably freeze though.
Dearest glitchers! It is me, ProfessorGlitch! It has been too long! Anyway, I just wanted to answer Calhaora's old question: Can you get past Gary without the game crashing? The answer is: YES!!! You can! I have done it, and have actually gotten to Fuschia City (I think, but it has been about a year since I deleted the save file)! I had gotten past Gary by using a Burn Heal inside the lab, thus using it outside got you stuck in a wall. After a long harsh battle of disobedience (the Glitchmon are really high in level and don't obey hardly EVER), you can hope the game doesn't freeze after beating Gary, and you WILL get an error, but you must keep pushing A and B and Down repeatedly until you move a step (again, this may not work for you, for I was VERY lucky to have this happen). Eventually, you will be out of the lab (after a lot of trial and error) and you will be home free! I would HIGHLY recommend saving after escaping the lab because I assume you will cause the game to freeze sometime in the future! It will take some time. It took me about 45 minutes to an hour to get out! And in case you were wondering why I deleted my save file, I was experimenting with an undiscovered tune I had found, and the game has a mind of it's own and SAVED in a glitched state, forcing me to delete and start from scratch (but since I was so aggravated, I didn't want to bother with it, but I will restart probably tomorrow or maybe tonight)! It was horrible! But again, you CAN proceed with the game after Gary (using som glitched items to make NPC's disappear and giving you the ability to walk through one wall boundary, which is pretty random), but it will take some time... Proceed with caution, and GOOD LUCK!!!!! :D
Yep...it was in my backpack when the entire thing - along with a MacBook Pro, an iPod, and various textbooks, was stolen.  Probably the least valuable thing in the bag, but still...
I dun fucked up my game something fierce.
The game is making it's own map. Nothing is the same. There's a random grass field in the middle of Pallet Town. The road leading up to Mt. Moon has become a giant canyon, and the path to Victory Road's gate is blocked by trees.
I have no idea how to get around these obstacles, and the game treats parts of these areas as out-of-bounds spots if you go too far. It's actually kind of neat.
Welp, I've glitched my Yellow version past the point of no return.
Not only can I not go past Lavender Town due to the maps being permanently changed (the road from Rock Tunnel to Cerulean City is blocked off my a mountain wall that's suddenly appeared, and the route from Lavender leading to Saffron City is just water after a point), but I can't even fly to another city to try and escape that grand clusterfuck I've created.
When I use Fly (because I suddenly have the Badge that lets me use it) and choose a city or town to go to, the overworld color changes to a turqoise-like shade, and when I arrive at the new destination, I am unable to move or use the start menu.
I was able to get the "Your Safari game is over!" message and be warped to the gate, which was my last resort since I could go into the Safari Zone, leave, and (hopefully) return to Saffron City like normal. But NOPE! I have no money, and leaving the gate as is takes me to a Glitch City that disables the walk through walls glitch VaeporSage mentioned.
Sorry, my lovable 4. . who served as the inspiration for Glitchy, but it looks like our adventure ends here. We had some good times, at least.
Unfortunately I'm stuck with dialup, so uploading videos is out of the question until I grow enough patience to deal with YouTube's s**t.
I do, however, have some photos!
I also found something interesting: If you get the "Your Safari game is over!" message, use VaeporSage's walk through walls quirk to get around the admission's guy and save. Reset the game and walk towards the exit to Saffron City. Depending where you are, you can walk out a door and undo the map corruption, but at the cost of Fly possibly bringing up a Glitch Trainer.
The Glitch Trainer will send out an A (or Q), and you will not be able to do anything. For some reason, you will not send out a Glitchmon of your own, so the FIGHT option is useless. You can, however, throw a Poké Ball/Great Ball/Any Ball, really, at A. The Glitch Trainer will block it and the battle will end.
This, on the other hand, slows you down and disables text boxes. Also, if you have a poisoned Glitchmon with you (which is 101% likely), the music will add a new layer on itself, creating something of a musical round. It's actually pretty cool if you're in Celadon City.
So battling anybody is a very fucking bad idea.
Although my 4. . kills the opponent's first Pokémon to death 8 times before it dies dead, their next Pokémon is level 0 with an unbelievably outrageous amount of HP. If you're feeling brave and decide to wait out that waste of time, their next Pokémon is also level 0 with infinity +1 HP.
I've never bothered to try and defeat any of these Trainers since I don't have the patience for it, so I don't know what happens when you win.
Also, if the Trainer only has one Pokémon, it behaves like normal but when you defeat it, they send out a 3TrainerPoké (at level 64 for me) who proceeds to destroy and kill everything you love while it laughs at your puny attacks, and your brevity in trying to faint it. I defeated one of these assholes once and the game locked up when the battle ended.
Judging from the pictures a similar thing happens to me while using the walk through walls cheat and messing up the overworld going where I shouldn't, like areas that don't load properly if you walk through walls.
I don't really remember how I got the map to f**k up like that, nor do I know how this happened.
AND NOW IT'S STORY TIEM WITH UNCLE BERT!
NO MOM NO I DON'T WANNA GO TO UNCLE BERT'S HOUSE HE ALWAYS TALKS TO ME ABOUT HYDRAS AND CAPES.
So one day I decided to go to the Power Plant because I wanted to fight Zapdos, to see what would happen to Glitchy (my 4. .) and what sort of EXP would be gained and split.
The Power Plant was crumbling and abandoned; fitting, considering the horrible accident that occurred there years ago. Chunks of debris were scattered around, from walls, to the roof, and shards of window glass. Hell, there were holes in the floor! But nonetheless, I was determined to face the gold, thundrous bird, and to hopefully catch it as my own.
But this was no ordinary Zapdos, no sir, it was nothing of the kind. For what I saw that day was none other than a level 141 Chansey. What had this fiend done to the thunder bird? With that kind of strength, it must've overwhelmed and slaughtered Zapdos. Blast it all! What a horrendous beast.
Its strength was more than I could muster. Glitchy, although level 181 and packing a serious punch, was so unprepared for the encounter with Chansey, he refused to obey me. It was clear he only did it because he didn't want to get me hurt should the Chansey retaliate, but there was no way we were going to let the walking, Kirby-like abomination get away!
After a mighty battle that lasted well into the third fortnight, we had finally beaten down Chansey just enough so that I could throw one of my many Master Balls at it and catch it. But, before the purple and white sphere could open up to capture the thing, Chansey ate the egg in its pouch, fully healing her injuries.
So I punched it in the face and left. Honestly, what a waste of time.
XBox huge photos are attached.
...I think this post originally had some sort of point but I forget what it is.
Ladies and gentlemen, I would like you to meet 9, a 3TrainerPoké who will completely wreck everything you care about.
This guy came with Guillotine, Fire Punch, Razor Wind, and some other attack I don't care about (Double Slap). I learned about 9 when I saw him get some EXP after a battle and decided to see what he was, since he was nicknamed which is kind of unusual.
When he gained experience, 9 grew to level 9, that punster. I decided to take him for a spin and sent him out a Pidgey who thought it was hardcore, but what that Pidgey didn't expect was
TOTAL AND UTTER ANNIHILATION.
For kicks, I had 9 use Guillotine, expecting it not to do anything. Instead, he slaughtered it instantly.
ALL HAIL 9.
Just a tip, if you want to get perfect timing easily, get a metronome at 120 BPM, and time it so the first beat is when you press "A," and the second beat is when you turn off the GB. Works for me 99% of the time.
Well, I just got it to work in red, forgot about the naming part so my name is AAAAAAA and my rival is John everything seems to be the same as in yellow so I have that useless 99999999999 pokemon with only tm55 and my rival is now 99999John and changing the same pokemon will get you the items but interesting to have this on red but so far not much is different.
He found some odd things on my newly saveabused (German) Yellow Cardrige....
Badly I didnt remember witch Pokes I swapped, but now my Game behaves reallyuhm..strange.
I should add, that Im doing the swapps EVERYTIME on Cinnabar Island, as I love to flee from Oak with the ?????board xD
Well the oddity is, that my game ist laggy and slow as hell even at the Start when I chose my File. Than I have 8 Badges, Caught 88 Pokemon, Played 0:02 and  own Zero Cash. I need to press "A" a loooot to get the Game into doing something.
And I clearly  remember saving on Cinnabar.
But when I start the Game, I found myself in the Safari Zone.....how the Hack I end up there? Plus it is in the State of "Safari Glitch" which I cant do since I havent a Flyer or something... I was even in Fuchsia before o.ô
Can someone say what might be happening?
Hey everyone,
I'm starting to investigate save abuse in RBY, using my french version. Outside of traditionnal warp thing, I read through the thread, and I wanted to spot out any useful effects.
Start the game with any item
So the first interesting thing about save abuse is that it allows someone to start the game with any item he wants. This is roughly an adaptation of the Prevented Progress Glitch's full demonstration using Save Corruption : http://glitchcity.info/wiki/index.php/Oak%27s_Parcel_prevented_progress_glitch but it will only work in R/B.
The idea is to store any item you want in the PC before fixing the item bag (step 5). Continue steps normally as your progress will not be prevented in R/B version because the glitch was fixed. You can then fully fix your game by depositing the last glitch pokemon you have (and release all of them). Your game should entirely be back to normal, and you can withdraw previously stored items to use it on your game. Outside of obvious benefits from having master balls or key items, you can use this to start the game with the surfboard, for example.
For some reason in my french version, it is not possible to catch a pokemon to reduce the number of pokemon so you have to deposit 254 of them. The only fix I know to this is using the safari zone glitch (see below) to catch a pokemon in it, then warp.
We are discussing ways to fix game after corruption on another thread : http://forums.glitchcity.info/index.php?topic=7265
Safari Pokemons ?
VaeporSage documented on page 6 this glitch
Quote
By switching the third Pokemon with the thirty-sixth immediately after corrupting the save, I was told that my Safari game was over. I paid to get "back" in, and swapped those two Pokemon again. This disabled the step count (500/500) and allowed me to walk around for as long as I liked.
So I did it in Red, and tried to do something with it. My idea was to start the game with safari pokemons. This is how I discovered the fix to the previous glitch, but unfortunately, since the real pokemons you catch while swapping glitch pokemons seems to disappear, once you warp and fix your party with the PC, you don't have them anymore. And since there is no PC to fix your party in the safari zone, there don't seem to be a way to keep them (and even if, you wouldn't be able to warp anymore, so you wouldn't be back to palet town).
I don't know if you can see a way to achieve it. So far, this safari zone thing seems to be useless because you can't exit it without warping through 1->10 pokemon switch.
WTW ?
So I also have been trying this :
Quote
Through utter luck today, I found a simple walk-though-walls method that will probably save your files a trillion times over.
Switch the Pokemon two slots above the first Pokemon with the fifth Pokemon, and wall tiles will instantly 'de-wall' themselves.
From VaeporSage again. But it didn't work for me, nor in Red, neither in Yellow. Bert seems to have succeeded but maybe I'm missing something here.
Bert seems to have succeeded but maybe I'm missing something here.
I'unno, I just did it and got it to work. Not sure why everyone else can't. Maybe it's got something to do with bag contents or what Glitchmon are switched?
Title: Re: Pokemon Yellow "Save Abuse" Glitch
Post by: Krys3000 on April 18, 2015, 03:10:26 pm
Well I switch the fifth with the glitch pokemon that is 2 slots above the first one. Immediately after the game begins, just as VaeporSage said.
I wouldn't be surprise, considering I am playing a french game, if I was the only one that failed but it appears some could and some couldn't in this thread so there might be something we don't get and I will look further into this :)
Post by: Krys3000 on April 20, 2015, 05:10:50 am
I did some digging into this :
Start the game with safari pokemons
- Start the game with save corruption
- Switch 3>36. You will be transported to safari zone. Pay, and enter. You can switch back 3>36 to have unlimited steps. Though as you will see this is not useful because you can't have the caught pokemons for now.
- Catch any pokemon. It will be a Magmar, and reduce the number of pokemons you have to 51.
- Switch 1>10, you now have 255 items.
- Go to the 36th item, and toss 249. Exit safari zone, and you will be in Fuchsia City.
- Go the PC and withdraw the Potion to fix your bag. Exit the PC, and switch 1>10 again. This will allow you a 'last warp' but don't use it now. Instead, use the PC to deposit 50 pokémons, keeping the last one.
- Go back into safari zone (by feet, this time). Catch any pokemon you want, you can catch more than 5 if you have changed the box before leaving the PC.
- Open the bag, and go to the 36th item which you will have 7. Toss 6.
- Exit the safari zone to be in Viridian City.
- You won't be able to encounter any pokemon or to talk to any NPC until you deposit the last glitch pokemon.
- You can now fix your bag using the NPC on Route 1 that will give you 1 Potion. If this doesn't fix the bag, you can go to Viridian's shop get Oak's Parcel, it will fix it and you will still have the Parcel.
- You are now free to start the game with safari pokemons in your party !
This was tested on Red but I assume it works in yellow.
However, in french Red, as I reported earlier, attempting to catch any pokemon outside of safari zone witch 255 pokemons in your party will freeze the game. So you have to go the safari zone first, but an alternate way to do this is to warp to fuschia in the first place, go to safari zone, catch Magmar, then exit the safari zone, fix the bag, activate last warp mode and deposit the pokemons. Then, you can go back to safari zone. In french yellow catching a pokemon with 255 pokemons if the party does not crash the game, so I can catch any pokemon elsewhere instead (but I still need to be able to go to the safari zone by feet, so...). I don't know if this freeze happens in US R/B versions.
Another alternate way that works in french version is to warp to Fuschia, fix the bag then active last warp mode. Deposit 254 pokemons and perform the glitch. This is obvious because the only reason to catch Magmar is to reduce the number of pokemon to deposit. But it's way longer so I prefer going twice into the safari zone.
The last warp thing allows you to adapt this glitch to catch any pokemon and start the game with :
Start the game with any caught pokemon
- Start the game with save corruption
- Switch 3>36. You will be transported to safari zone. Pay, and enter. You can switch back 3>36 to have unlimited steps. Though as you will see this is not useful because you can't have the caught pokemons for now.
- Catch any pokemon. It will be a Magmar, and reduce the number of pokemons you have to 51.
- Switch 1>10, you now have 255 items.
- Go to the 36th item, and toss a number you want to warp to a place of your choice. You need to be close to a PC, so the best thing is to warp to a town. Exit the safari zone to warp.
- Go the PC and withdraw the Potion to fix your bag. Exit the PC, and switch 1>10 again. This will allow you a 'last warp' but don't use it now. Instead, use the PC to deposit 50 pokémons, keeping the last one.
- Go any place you want to catch a pokemon you want. Since you have masterballs in the 30th slot, this is easy to do. You can catch more than 5 if you have changed the box before leaving the PC. When you're done, go back to the Pokemon Center.
- Open the bag, and go to the 36th item. Toss all but one.
- Exit the Pokemon Center to be in Viridian City.
- You won't be able to encounter any pokemon or to talk to any NPC until you deposit the last glitch pokemon.
- You can now fix your bag using the NPC on Route 1 that will give you 1 Potion. If this doesn't fix the bag, you can go to Viridian's shop get Oak's Parcel, it will fix it and you will still have the Parcel.
- You are now free to start the game with the newly caught pokemons !
This glitch goes under the same considerations, about the safari zone, than the previous one.
I think there's a way to go to Saffron to get Hitmonlee/chan, and start the game with them. I'll test that too.
Oh and I might have found another way to WTW but this is too early to tell as I need to investigate.
Title: Re: Pokemon Yellow "Save Abuse" Glitch
Post by: Krys3000 on April 20, 2015, 07:35:39 am
Getting Hitmonlee/chan was a little more tricky since you need to avoid a normally unavoidable fight, but it can be done using the property of the WTW I found.
Start the game with hitmonlee/hitmonchan
- Start the game with save corruption
- Switch 1>10, you now have 255 items.
- Exit your house and go to the rival's one.
- Go to the 36th item, and toss 246. Exit the rival's house, and you will be in Saffron City. If you do this with your house, you will be stuck because of a Rocket Grunt.
- Go inside the dojo. Then, go here :
(http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2015/17/1429536687-rouge.png)
- The 35th item should now be Masterball x0. Toss 145. You now have the ability to walk through certain walls. As you will notice, this is very messy so just go straight to the pokeballs. And pick the pokemon you want (which will go to box 1).
- Now the game is so messy you can't do anything and you can't exit the dojo. So instead, switch 3>36. You will be transported to safari zone. Pay, and enter. Catch a pokemon, it will become a magmar and reduce your party to 51 pokemons.
- Check item 36th that you should have 10, and toss 9. Exit safari zone and you will be in Viridian.
- Go to the PC, and change box for Box 2, now start depositing 50 pokemons. Withdraw hitmonlee/chan in box 1 and you can now deposit the last glitch pokemon.
- Fix the bag by getting the potion from the route 1's NPC. If this doesn't fix the bag, you can go to Viridian's shop get Oak's Parcel, it will fix it and you will still have the Parcel.
- You are now free to start the game with your Hitmonlee/Chan !
This WTW ability can be used in any place where your 35th item is 0x. But it is too messy for a normal use in bypassing cities. I will try to find more applications to this.
Note : if you get out of safari zone without warping you will be back in saffron city. You can then warp back to Viridian, using the SHOP. If you try to warp from the Pokemon Center, you will be in glitch city for some reason I don't understand.
Also for the other glitches I posted earlier, it doesn't seem necessary to fix the bag then swap 1>10 again. I will check that and remove it.
Start the game with eevee
An easy one
- Start the game with save corruption
- Switch 1>10, you now have 255 items.
- Go to the 36th item, and toss 250. Exit the house and you will be in Celadon.
- Get inside the Mansion from behind and get Eevee which will go to box 1.
- Switch 3>36. You will be transported to safari zone. Catch a pokemon, it will be a Magmar and will reduce the number of pokemon in your party to 51.
- Check item 36th that you should have 6, and toss 5. Exit the building and you will be in Viridian.
- Go to the PC, and change box for Box 2, now start depositing 50 pokemons. Withdraw Eevee in box 1 and you can now deposit the last glitch pokemon.
- Fix the bag by getting the potion from the route 1's NPC. If this doesn't fix the bag, you can go to Viridian's shop get Oak's Parcel, it will fix it and you will still have the Parcel.
- You are now free to start the game with your Eevee !
The safari part is necessary to reduce your party for the same reason as before. This might not be a necessity on US versions.
Also if you can get to a stone in your bag, you can evolve Eevee.
I don't really know if this is known, but you can trigger the item underflow while still having 0 Pokémon by doing 9>10, 10>11. This allows you to get rid of any Prevented Progress in Yellow.
Also, about hitmonlee/hitmonchan, I saw in a vid from Torchickens that you can trigger a WTW by doing a 1>62 swap so this help much in the dojo.
I don't know why nobody has mentioned this (yet), but there IS a way past Oak/Coffee Guy (A.K.A. "Progress Prevention Glitch" as I've seen it called). Simply perform the bad save after delivering the Parcel. Sure, you lose Pikachu (forever AFAIK), but you gain memory editing power.
You can later remove the corrupt Pokemon team by catching a Pokemon (not sure if Pikachu counts (yet)), and depositing anything invalid into the PC boxes and Releasing them. Or keep them, I don't care. :) Not sure the side effects of switching any leftover invalids around in the party are, but I caught a legitimate Ditto at some point and its OT ID stopped matching my Trainer ID. (Possibly because I fiddle with the items, not sure).
Notes of interest are the Surfboard item, giving you access to Cinnabar Island very early (and a chance to catch Ditto lol).
Progress Prevention isn't the SRAM glitch.
Progress Prevention is that under the right circumstances (such as performing the SRAM glitch, mostly known as the "save corruption glitch"), the game's progression is halted by Oak.
Your remark is still correct, but it is also possible to use any form of Wrong Warping (easy using the Item pack-powered memory edition and "last exit" doors) to skip Coffee Guy.
Lastly, you almost certainly modified your TID by "fiddling with the items", since items past the 20th slot are just a part of the game's RAM interpreted as items. Modifying them does modify game data (such as TID :P)
What I'm trying to say is, fight Gary, deliver the Parcel to Oak, THEN perform the SAVE bug (without having saved during all that). Which is a little more time consuming on normal hardware due to the timing (during saving), but possible.
(http://i.imgur.com/qkkvrHn.png)
^No Pikachu present, unfortunately. :(
Also, I haven't gotten the WTW scenario to work out of this. So if somebody could produce step by step instructions or a short video, that would be appreciated.
Yeah, but that doesn't fall under "prevented progress" since nothing prevents your progress. That's what I meant.
I don't mean what you said is useless, since I don't remember this being documented anywhere. I might just add that to the wiki.
I would like to mention that if you are on emulator, you can guarantee the success of this glitch by breakpointing address $1C:77DA (That's the address in Red/Blue, i'm unsure about Yellow), saving the game, and restarting when the emulator hits that breakpoint.
In fact, I have not found definitive proof that your name affects the the success of this glitch at all. Whether or not this glitch succeeds seems to be entirely dependent on whether or not the game fixes the checksum.
Edit: I have also confirmed the glitch to be functional on Japanese Blue and Pikachu versions. As it stands, it is impossible to pull this off on Japanese Red/Green due to the way the games initialize SRAM. However, you can still transfer Pokemon from an older save file.
1. Name yourself 'AAAS' and Save Abuse.
2. Scroll up in the PkMn menu 26 times.
3. Exit the PkMn menu
If you don't get the infinite name, open the PkMn screen again and close after waiting a little. If you're lucky, the game will return without collapsing, and you'll have a save file full of overflowed stack. :p
There may be a way to get a PkMn-menu-viewing item, and an itemfinder, potentially allowing exiting of the menu without inf-name corruption.
That's a useful tip. Thanks!
I remember somebody (FractalFusion?) talking about the SRAM glitch in one of the Japanese versions, and I guessed it probably would work on the original Red/Green v1.0 and v1.1. I don't know if I was ever able to get it to work on those versions though, despite it occurring in Japanese Blue and Japanese Yellow. Though FractalFusion posted a VBM file of it working on one of the versions which may have been a Red/Green.
(f**k, i forgot to mention that version only works in pokemon eng yellow. for redblue it's the same but replace the name with 'AAS' instead)
This route uses the way the game handles drawing sprites for Pok`emon, which, when invalid, can reach far beyond normal limits. it reaches into WRAM, as far as address $D2EE for PkMn #255. By scrolling up, we are making the address $D15A change. It adds $40 every time a sprite's frame changes. The hex of capital letter S is $92, and $92+$40*3=$52, which is the byte for the player name. And a variable referencing itself is...bad news, to say the least.
So basically this setup uses a slightly unorthodox method of making the player name repeat itself. I'm working on finding a setup that allows a quick way to save the game in the infinite name state.
EDIT: Getting pikachu is necessary, but if you set the cursor at pokemon 255 right before , you can still scroll through your later pokemon, so long as you don't press down
In theory you can change it if you deposit a Pokémon in the box, followed by Q, followed by the Pokémon you want, followed by the Pokémon with the colour you want, then withdraw the first Pokémon to apply the effects on Pokémon 3.
What slot was that Dragonite in? If you know the exact slot I can look into what controls its colour for you. Its possible there's something about that Dragonite's species byte 2 being easy to change. A lot of data beyond slot 6 actually isn't Pokémon data at all, hence why it could change so easily.
At the moment, Dragonite is #1 in my party, but I think I originally found it (it "became" part of my team like a year ago) somewhere in the 20's. If it's fainting cry is any indication, it's a Mankey hybrid.
Depositing things into the PC won't work, because the game crashes when I try to do so.
