Title: Pokémon G/S Space World '97 Rom Dump [In Progress]
Post by: Prisma on May 29, 2018, 07:26:00 pm
Hey what's up guys it's the one and only Papa Doc here coming to you with some exciting news!

I came across this thread while taking a casual stroll through 4chan it looks like a notable rom hacker
by the name of Sanquii has gotten a hold of a rom dump of the Space World 1998 Demo of Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Proto: Pokémon Gold and Silver (https://tcrf.net/Proto:Pok%C3%A9mon_Gold_and_Silver/)

Team Spaceworld (Research and Translation) (https://twitter.com/teamspaceworld/)

G/S Public Prototype Disassembly (https://github.com/pret/pokegold-spaceworld/)

Pokémon G/S Space World  1997 demo footage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AttkF4KqiTM/)

GlitterBerri's account of the 1997 demo (http://www.glitterberri.com/pokemon-gold-silver/spaceworld-97-demo/)

I've attached a screenshot of a beta Pichu and the start screen.

This is all very exciting stuff as we will finally get to PLAY the beta of G/S and discover most if not all of
it's mysteries and hidden treasures we have never gotten to see. I've always been fascinated with beta/alpha
aspect of the first two generations and I can not wait to see what we will find such as potential beta or cut pokemon.

What do you guys think?

Yes! It finally happened. =) i'm really happy about this, i simply love beta stuff (might even like it better than glitches), so this is great news indeed.

Now we only need playable roms of any beta version of Ocarina of time (formely Zelda64) and the nintendo64 prototype for Mother3 and i would literally be satisfied for life :3

Interesting.

Sanqui is a member here, and before any Gen III distribution carts were dumped he mentioned that his friend owned at least one (https://forums.glitchcity.info/index.php?topic=7114.msg196994#msg196994), although as far as I'm aware he wasn't able to dump them, and eventually someone else dumped a couple of them.

It got leaked. Finishing the translation is still planned.

Rough documentation (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B5epMdm1Wcvh33qFABpw-SO76uZt6WNSl0UsD5yq_dI/edit#gid=0) (was being cleaned up for TCRF + the translation patch)

It's amazing a ROM this sensitive got leaked, with all the unused Pokémon, items, moves, minigames, debug menus and so on.

I like how the gameplay of this demo is very much more similar to Red/Green, even including glitch Pokémon like the originals and no ?????.

Regarding those. Your party Pokémon data begins at D6AA but I don't know how you'd modify the wild Pokémon other from the debug menu yet, do you know?

I knew i remembered seeing this sprite for Pikachu used in the Gold Beta before; it was featured as a sticker in Gameboy Camera. look it's the same one:

Yeah the game feel much more similar to red/green/blue japanese games and you can really feel that it's more primitive compared to the final polished gameboy color releases. Talk about inbetween transitional version, It's like Generation 1½

ah, no. So far i've only found these glitch Pokés through the debug fight option. =) So i don't know yet.

Yeah I noticed that too. According to TCRF Chansey's sprite is from Game Boy Camera as well (although I can't find it as a stamp in the Game Boy Camera game and don't know if that was a mistake).

Additionally Mew's sprite was used in a Mew distribution cartridge.

Definitely!

OK thanks anyway! :)

Edit: Items begin at D19E
Edit 2: D6B4: Pokémon slot 1 moves
Edit 3: OK I found the wild Pokémon addresses; CDD7 and CDD9

I found skateboard sprites in the game :D

Edit: never mind, didn't realize they were easily viewable in the debug menu's "Character Viewer" until now lol

Additionally Mew's sprite was used in a Mew distribution cartridge.

Wow. That's also really cool. Wonder what it would look like inside of those distribution versions, it's clearly some version of Blue :O

Nice! Really wanted these. great that you could find em.

She lives! What's up!

I'm going to save the ROMs for archiving purposes, the patched header versions
and the originals and then wait for the translation to come out.
My biggest hope is for someone to make a romhack of this into a full game with all the
Pokemon added including the official Johto Pokemon with a full story.

It looks like Silver got leaked as well, apparently the major differences are wild pokemon
and the logo on the intro screen.

Are we still not allowed to link to roms or does no one care anymore? Considering these are unofficial?
I might set up a page if all else fails.

P.S. Can someone move this to the Emulation and Rom section? Thanks!

Sure.

I personally feel it's still a step too far to upload them here (in particular because this is what appears to be an official prototype), even though other websites have them.

This makes me very happy! It's the best Pokemon news we've got within the past few days IMO. I've always wanted to play this beta, and now I can. Now if I can only figure out how to set up the GB assemblers on my computer since someone is working on a disassembly of the game... (I really wish it was easier to compile GB games...)

Found it. It has a different logo on the title screen and a much better border

Interesting to see the difference in borders. I assume both games are essentially the same outside of the logos? (Just got home from work so I'm catching up on news lol)

Looking through the ripped pokemon sprites, I realised a thing: we got screwed out of a shark TWO gens in a row! T_T

Also, I think they scraped electric and dark kitties cause they redid "dogs" trio into "beasts", with two ending feline.

I've noticed that second floors of centres are unique and the first centre past the demo GATE actually has trade/battle/time capsule rooms.  I wonder if there's any way to save or get any Pokemon data from this.

Would be fun if the game would run flawlessly on a flash card gameboy cartridge, could try and see if trading with a gen1 game or something would work.

I don't see why it wouldn't work if flashed to a MBC3 cartridge.

You could try trading with an emulator that supports link cable stuff anyway. Probably won't work.

Have created some articles about the glitch Pokémon in these versions for us to read about. :)

https://glitchcity.info/wiki/List_of_glitch_Pok%C3%A9mon#Japanese_Gold.2FSilver_Nintendo_Space_World_1997_demo

(I deleted a post of mine earlier with glitch Pokémon screenshots but because the articles only need the sprites which don't class under copyright/or debatable I thought it would be safe to do so)

Regarding 253, I tried it out in debug Fight on player's side, on debug Gold; and although its cry was very long, it eventually went past it and to the fight menu.

Has anyone explored the PCs btw? Was messing around w/ it yesterday and there were a few low level Pokemon stored. (off the top of my head there was a Lv. 5 Scyther) I fumbled around through the PC menus to see what Pokes were there (since I don't know Japanese clearly), so I'm looking forward to the Eng translation once it's out haha.

My biggest hope is for someone to make a romhack of this into a full game with all the

I'm going to be blunt: forget it. It's impossible to fit all that data in the ROM. Plus, there are only 2 slots (at best) available for new Pokémon. Adding more would require a massive re-write of the game engine, to allow 2-byte Pokémon.

I don't get it, just download RGBDS (https://github.com/rednex/rgbds/releases/). The rest is as simple as running `make`.

I've noticed that second floors of centres are unique and the first centre past the demo GATE actually has trade/battle/time capsule rooms.  I wonder if there's any way to save or get any Pokemon data from this.

The game runs on flashcarts. You simply need to use the "fixed headers" version, since the original ROMs report an incorrect MBC type, which leads to a wrong bankswitch into an invalid opcode: crash.

Hey everyone, long time no see. I've been checking out the prototypes myself. Being a regular contributor to TCRF (well semi-regular as I go through spells where I don't wanna make edits.) I spend a lot of time talking about it  on their discord server which has a channel dedicated to it. TCRF staffers are currently working on researching the ROMs. The leaker of the ROM on 4Chan is just that, a leaker and not the original source. They were forced to come out early because as usual, 4chan has to ruin surprises. (one of the reasons I hate 4chan so much.)

The original plan was to release the ROM after the translation and documentation were complete but since someone on 4chan decided that this was taking too long, they got impatient and leaked it.  As for the translation, it's about a month away or so from being completed from what I understand.

You can check the TCRF page here for information regarding the stuff found so far: https://tcrf.net/Proto:Pok%C3%A9mon_Gold_and_Silver
Also has a list of all the pokemon in the ROM.

btw, Skateboarding can be accessed via debug mode. It's buggy as hell though and doesn't work quite right unless you hold down the no clip button.

You'll also notice the map is based on Japan. Well it turns out there's more to this as the town with the Ruins of Alph is where Hiroshima should be, which when you think about this and the fact that Unown are in said ruins, it starts feeling a little more disturbing. The desert town seems to be based off of Japan's desert area as well. Also of note, Kanto has been downsized to a single large town. Probably because of the compression issues early on.

Rather than this being a full on prototype of the final product, it seems this version was dropped and they started over. No doubt the release of the anime in 98 had some influence on their decision.

Hi Glisp! Long time no see, we're glad to have you back!

That's some very insightful information thank you for sharing
that, and the bit about Unown does  sound quite disturbing.
I'm glad something like didn't end up in the final games, but with
the success of Pokémon there's no way they would include it.

I dunno about that papa doc.Game Freak did do some pretty distasteful things in the past. (well Jynx was unintentional, but it still wasn't tasteful to westerners) Supposedly also, the desert in Unova seems very loosely based on Ground Zero in New York. (well technically it's not ground zero anymore, but still) Probably not true but it's still rather messed up that anyone would think that.
