General Discussion / Re: GCL APPRECIATION THREAD
« on: February 14, 2020, 09:49:38 pm »
Yeah nah mate it's a bit alright hey
As for why they're doing all this, well, it's probably because of this, and them only having 12% market share this quarter. They're panicking and trying to throw ideas out there without the comfort of making sure they make sense first. Normal people like us might think they're doing fine, but I suspect it's what the shareholders are yelling right now. Probably shouting "do something! Whatever you're doing isn't working! Make something different!" and this is what they came up with on the spot.

Maybe. I'm not that much of a speculator.

Will it work? Maybe. No matter what happens, the media and some YouTube channels will slurp it all up and go "yes no holes this is so exciting" and do Apple's marketing department's job for them, repeating the same bullshit. But there's only so much bullshit Apple can do before it starts alienating everyday consumers who actually buy things. Sure, a lot of people are clueless and don't know what's best for them, but like… fucking with charging, though?

Casual phone users seem to care a lot about charging their phones. I can kinda see someone at an event just running out of battery and being like "whoops! I can't even ask if anyone has a charger because it requires a weird wireless thing!", this basically screws with the whole idea of portable chargers and charging ports on other devices that people are already used to.

And more importantly, that Android (unless Samsung is also trying to pull some bullshit) allows users to do just fine. Locking users down like this and trying to force them into proprietary solutions and telling them how and when they can use their device only really works if you're the market leader, or otherwise have an effective monopoly. I feel like it's not gonna work if people can just buy an Android phone instead and save themselves the trouble… but then, I don't really have faith in the general public's ability to make informed decisions anymore.

...Yeah nah like hang on mate. I think I'm gonna need the steps of how to break the game explained here. I have a moral obligation to break the game. Well, if you could call it a game.

...Wait, what?

The game's exploited just like that? Just by… entering text? Surely I'm missing something here…

Edit: Decided to try whatever this nonsense is.

Well, it lets me enter my most favourite thing to do as homosexuality and my least favourite thing to do as capitalism, so there's that. However, I have no idea where or how those two fields are actually used at all other than just for the novelty of entering them into an organizer. Like, I can't even see it displayed anywhere, so even if I hit my head and got amnesia and I was like "oh no I forgot what my favourite thing is" I couldn't boot up the ET Digital Companion to find out.

Not entirely sure of the benefits over Mary-Kate and Ashley: Pocket Planner.
Yeah but uhhhhhhhhhh the case

...Kinda wish you could buy Mac cases separately, and also that they made the translucent coloured plastic type cases like with the Power Mac G3/G4 and such; but that's not how Apple works

I think they'll still have a market for the support? Been a while since I used OS X but I don't think the OS is a selling point anymore
- The ol' Pokemon Crystal save battery deatharoo. Dunno if it's worth going through the trouble to replace it.
- Still have Yellow, but it's very finicky and sometimes boots to a corrupted Nintendo logo, so I guess the cartridge connectors are on their way out or something.
- I've had Pokemon Pinball freeze randomly on me.
- Super Mario Galaxy disc scratched. Now there's one where I will not be buying another disc.
- Bought a really cheap GBA cart on eBay (Enchanted, I think it was) once, it was a fake, so I decided to dismantle it. I'm not really the best at dismantling, so it's not going back together again. That counts as broken, right?
-Depends on how well you can take things apart and not break them.
-Or the MBC is. That happened to me on a Silver cart.
-just hack your Wii and use a USB loader with a rip of a disc you can buy. or pirate it, either works lol
-pics? also strike the self-fixing of the cart from point 1 i guess

- Not very well, see also: The last point
- The cart boots fine eventually, it's just a gremlin and likes to misbehave
- Well I mean like… I'm gonna; I just wish I didn't rip it as .gcz back in the day like a dumbarse
- Don't remember where I put it, I think I might have thrown away the pieces
Debate Wars / Re: Political Viewpoints
« on: June 28, 2019, 08:01:51 pm »
The poll question is interesting: it refers to USA political viewpoints specifically. I've always thought that the political climate over there is a lot different, to the point where the conservative party here are probably considered left-leaning from a USA perspective, and the fringe racist parties are probably considered centrist. But anyway!

I actually don't have that much consistent political views, mainly because there's still a lot of stuff I don't know about. But I'll always believe things among the lines of this:
- People deserve a "fair go", for lack of a better term; deserve basic human rights and s**t, also education and not being shot and things like that
- People with disabilities and chronic illnesses etc deserve dignity and respect (I actually might be inclined to think disability pensions etc should be part of the healthcare system, and not the welfare system)
- Essential services (healthcare, energy, water, etc) shouldn't be sold off for profit, and are better off being managed by some organization who doesn't have profit as a motive (perhaps a government would be suitable for that)
- Hate speech doesn't need to be protected, and we can go without it
- Consumers deserve rights over large corporations

That's not necessarily the only things in politics I agree with, it's just all I can really think of right now. Sometimes I'm like "oh yeah that sounds agreeable for sure" but those ones are just what I find myself fighting for.

The weird thing is I get considered an "extremist leftist" or whatever, especially the first two things. It's kind of odd to me, because I don't explicitly consider myself a communist or socialist for believing in those things - I've never actually read up on communist/socialist/etc literature, after all. But if people want to say "You're a communist because you believe that", I'm just like s**t okay I guess I'm a communist then, if that's indeed what that term is used to mean, and nothing else. Just kind of weird, because I don't really know what my political orientation is exactly, the labels get shifted around so much.

Yeah I saw the icon in the recent unread topics list had a lock on it, and I was like "eh? What is this?" but I guess it's just computers being weird. Oh well.

Yeah, it's just… oof. Part of my upcoming life situation is why I'm not gonna get online when I get a Switch. I'm not gonna have a good connection.

It's a shame because I'll miss playing against people from across the world, but it's just not worth it. Too much trouble, especially when I'm paying for it.

Besides, even when there's theoretically not any connection issues, there's just something about playing online that seems... less fun. Sorta rage inducing.

I have no idea what it is.

I definitely have to agree with Raven Freak and Epsilon here. I know I've already talked about it in the Discord, but the more I think about it, the more I really have to agree.

Scorbunny is the only one who doesn't look completely s**t, personally, and that's only because it just looks a little bit s**t. I'm not a character design expert so I can't articulate what it is about these starters, but they just look really.... off.

Anyway, let's talk about the trailer a bit in general.

Feels like they didn't really tell us anything. Just showed us some ugly starters, some opponent trainer is a cute girl (damn right), the region has.... setpieces and details, and it's like… well of course it does.

It almost feels like they've deliberately set the bar low with Pokemon Go and Pokemon Let's Go so they can be like "yeah so we're actually making a Pokemon game". Hey kids! We have random encounters and normal catching mechanics! Yeah if you think about that in perspective, the other proper games had that too, so it's not actually special. The only reason why they need to sell us on that part is because stripped down experiences exist, and they need to reassure us that they _aren't_ giving us a stripped down basic game, they're saying "this could be done wrong but we won't do that", even though they're the ones who did the games without all the features anyway, so they're the ones who set the bar low in the first place, and.... argghhh

I'm falling asleep now, sorry for another tiredpost from your old pal Zowayix, I'm sure when I wake up I'll realise I have a lack of nuance
General Discussion / Re: The dream thread
« on: February 26, 2019, 06:48:56 pm »
Had a dream that there was some DVD that apparently, because it was so fucked up or whatever, you were only legally allowed to watch it if you had attempted suicide before, and you had to have the suicide note attached and sent in somewhere. Because the government said so.

The weirdest part was that my dad was there, he wasn't watching it but he needed me to go dig up that note and print out the thing and it was a bit awkward.

Yeah, that one didn't quite make sense.
Video Games Discussion / Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Well I would like to come over and play against you one day, but then I don't even attend my own country's majors, so y'know. Mostly because money and also because it's not worth me going all that way to go 0-2 and then spend the rest of the day being too scared to ask for friendlies, and I'm not one for travel, and... bleh. Complicated.

I have been semi-consistently going 2-2 or 3-2 at weeklies though! So that's good. I don't think I'm doing better than I was in Smash 4 still, I think it's just there are more low-level players for me to feast on (because they're all newbies) and so the brackets end up with me being seeded into people I can stomp and then lose to mid-level players.

But every week is in an improvement. Still don't have a Switch but I'm thinking more clearly and overall better, becoming better at spacing, more comfortable and confident with combos and Rest setups...
Wiki Discussion / Re: Natural glitches
« on: February 24, 2019, 01:06:23 pm »
Yeah I kinda agree that the term "natural glitch" isn't really intuitive. As someone who's horribly out of touch with all this stuff, I had to read all that talk page to figure out what it all meant. I think oversight would be fine: the actual definition we're going for here, if I'm understanding this with my accidentally-woke-up-after-just-5-hours-of-sleep brain, is any sequence of events where only intended programming has occurred (e.g. not having space in the bag) but has an undesirable result (e.g. softlock).

As for whether they're "important" or not: Well, I think they should be interesting enough to be worthwhile content, if that's what's being asked. Saves the trouble of having to figure out what counts as a glitch and what counts as an oversight.
Debate Wars / Re: Nintendo Switch Vs. 3DS/New 3DS
« on: February 19, 2019, 08:05:15 pm »
I do prefer the 3DS, to be honest. And I'm not just saying that because I don't have a Switch. The more I know about the Switch, everything about it seems to be a disappointment. No Virtual Console, paid online which is still terrible, still has Nintendo console problems like no inbuilt Ethernet and encouragement of gimmick waggle controls... just all these little things about it that make me think the Wii U is honestly better (but that's not what we're comparing it to). As a handheld it's bulky as f**k. I'd rather have a cost reduced version of the Switch that just omits the handheld mode because I wouldn't have a use for it. DS sold me on the concept of 2 screens being actually pretty good and they've taken that away.

Oh, and the games. There's nothing about Smash Ultimate that couldn't have been done on the Wii U if they wanted to do that; and Pokemon Let's Go is just a big oof. Lack of backwards compatibility with anything hurts a lot. Super Mario Odyssey is the only thing that I want that doesn't make me say "why should I need a whole new console for this?". Ports are overrated, they're just cut down versions of things I can play on other systems, and the Switch doesn't really offer any advantage other than the alleged handheld mode.

Mostly the cost. You cannot look at the Nvidia Shield that uses the same chipset and then look me in the eyes and truthfully tell me you believe the Switch is not overpriced as f**k.

But what I dislike most of all is the fanbase, if I'm gonna be truthfully completely honest.

You can't even say the words "Wii U" or "3DS" on Twitter/Facebook these days without some loudmouth chiming in about "BOOOOO DEAD CONSOLES!!! GET A SWIIIITCH" and going on a big rant, and it's just heavily obnoxious. I thought these people were supposed to be fans of Nintendo? They talk more s**t about those consoles than any Sony/Microsoft console evangelist ever has. Undeserved amounts of s**t. There are a few problems with the Wii U and 3DS, but every console has problems; overall the only reason why they're dead is because Nintendo decided to completely and mostly respectively stop supporting them, which is disappointing.

Most of all, I don't want any fucking twerp who doesn't have to pay bills/mortgage/rent to talk s**t to me about how I must be just poor if I can't justify the cost of the Switch. Don't mean to be a grumpy old person but if you don't even comprehend what adult responsibilities are, you should probably shut the f**k up when someone is talking about things that cost money.
