Emulation & ROM Hacking / Re: RNG Plays Pokemon
« on: May 19, 2020, 08:30:23 am »
So, I know its been a while, but any word on this? I unfortunately lost the hacked RNG rom because my phone broke, so been trying to implement this into the game, but now I don't have the gameshark code to activate it. Mind you, I don't know squat about disassembly, so if anyone has a patch for this, I'd greatly appreciate it, since hex editing Crystal_'s code in, doesn't actually do anything.

The Dumpster Out Back / Two amusing ideas, anyone down to try?
« on: May 19, 2020, 08:08:15 am »
(Sorry if this is in the wrong place)

So, I've had a bit of an amusing idea for this community. How about a race/challenge?

But here's the catch, your game will gradually begin killing itself. In other words, without using glitches to INSTANTLY beat the game (but you can use them to cheat), can you make it through Crystal_'s Blue or Gold, random memory corruption patches?

These will randomly corrupt the WRAM every 7 seconds, or so (I have them set to the slowest corruption possible).

You will probably need to save state like crazy.

The only requirements for this are:

1) Record your gameplay in VBA or some other emulator.
2) No using glitches to instantly teleport you to the end of the game, in other words, you should actually play the dang thing.
3) No HACKS or CHEATS that allow you to bypass the majority of the game. You are free to use glitches, hacks, codes/cheats that allow you to skip battles, but not instantly win them.
4) You cannot use saves/save states to undo a corruption, only to undo the game freezing or becoming unplayable.

I've been attempting this with Pokemon Blue for almost an hour, made it to Lavender, before saving was no longer an option, as it started to save the corruptions, which made Lavender impassable. Got stuck with just 1 Pokemon that had 1HP which would blackout the moment I move and send me back to the title screen.

Pokémon Glitch Discussion / Re: Glitch Codes?
« on: March 30, 2019, 11:17:26 am »
Funny enough at some point I was thinking about making a hack where you started with glitch Pokemon and you'd catch other glitches. I then tried making it into a roleplay, and then completely scrapped the idea. :V Anyways to encounter wild glitch Pokemon the gameshark code you'd want to use for yellow is 01XXD7CF, replace "XX" with the hex value of your choice. Victreebell is the last valid Pokemon, so anything after the hex value 0xBE will result in glitch pokemon.

Yeah, someone already made a small IPS patch for Red/Blue that makes your starters 3 glitch Pokemon but then abandoned it as well. Real shame, I'd actually be willing to "catch them all" for a change.
yeah that was me

Its a shame you never continued it.

I'm kind of curious, when you play the Pokemon games, what Pokemon do you prefer to be on your team?

(Obviously, you are limited to the Pokemon naturally found in the game and you are limited to the standard 6)

Additionally, do you edit your team to win, or do you stick with those you prefer?

GEN 1
Gengar | Hitmonchan | Alakazam | Lapras | Persian | Pidgeot

GEN 2
Espeon | Miltank | Tyranitar | Scizor | Ampharos | Azumarill

GEN 3
Gardevoir | Blaziken | Sableye | Delcatty | Aggron | Absol

GEN 4
Luxray | Lopunny | Purugly | Lucario | Weavile | Rhyperior

GEN 5
Liepard | Braviary | Lilligant | Zoroark | Haxorus | Bisharp

GEN 6
Pyroar | Gogoat | Pangoro | Meowstic | Noivern | Aurorus

GEN 7
Incineroar | Tsareena | Mimikyu | Dhelmise | Lurantis | Solgaleo

As for Gen 8, I haven't decided yet. But overall, every generation, I avoid using anything from a prior, and I try my best to avoid godly Pokémon.

Personally, I play to have the Pokémon I like, not the team that is the most powerful or broken or overused by everyone else.

Emulation & ROM Hacking / Re: Your Experience With Bootlegs
« on: March 29, 2019, 05:17:26 pm »
Ah, okay. I believe I played a bit of one for NES that had a really strange version of the Littleroot Town theme in the first town and The Hall of the Mountain King as the battle theme. Any of you know what that might have been called?

Well... thing is, there are a BUNCH of them that all kind of share the same names in a way. There's Kou Dai, Bao Shi, Guan Shou, Jing Ling, Zuan Shi. Really your best bet is to just get it again.

I really wish there was a midi rip of the GB/GBC Pokemon games, cause all we have online are bits and pieces.
The transcriptions out there are numerous and easily quality enough to have come from the ROM itself. Where were you looking?

Kind of everywhere, I've found s bunch, but also a lot of poorly exported midis as well.

What would you consider a "bootleg" in this case?

I never had the luck of running into any especially strange ones, but I did end up buying a fake Emerald on Amazon once. In general, don't trust resellers of these games unless they provide photos. I don't have a pic on me right now, but the outside was clearly different, I believe a shade similar to LeafGreen and with a non-holographic sticker. Every time I booted it up, before seeing the Continue menu the message "The game can be played." would appear, taken from the dry internal battery text, but with everything else removed. I do remember opening it up and seeing that there was a lithium battery in the usual spot, but it was a different kind than the ones used in legit copies of the game, so I'm assuming it either didn't get detected properly, or it had already run dry. When I dumped the ROM, it was 32 KB instead of 16, but couldn't find any glaring differences other than the cartridge itself and the Continue screen message.

This thread's made me want to find it again. I'll post a patch here for the curious when I do.

oh look a cease & desist from nintendo

yeah that's about right

What do you mean by this?

@Raven Freak, Jade was actually a knockoff version of the first installment in the Telefang series, which I've grown quite fanatical about over the years, at least as much as one can be about a series with such a short life. The world, the monster designs, the phone system, the puzzles, all the little details that made it feel like a deeply personal project, and the music, oh man, the music...just nothing not to like. Like many other people, I discovered it thanks to those bootlegs known as Diamond and Jade, but those had a lot of bugs, such as triggering invalid opcodes at the Game Over screen (and the custom number screen, I think), and randomly erasing the save sometimes, presumably due to a poorly connected internal battery (or just passing of time, as they had a real-time clock.)

Haven't heard of the NES Gold and Silver. What was the filename?

The definition of bootleg is a tad bit of a complex one to describe, but or me, I'd have to say "a game created (not hacked) for a console or device it should not be on".

I'd definitely have to say Gen 1 glitches are by far the most superior to use. I've seen more people use 8F to create games inside the game than I have seen happen with any modern glitch.

Emulation & ROM Hacking / Your Experience With Bootlegs

I'm kind of curious, what has been your experience with the bootleg Pokémon games? For me personally, I managed to beat the Pokémon Yellow bootleg (of course, after the game was patched to not be ridiculously hard, the English thing didn't matter, as I fully remember where to go and what to do).

I have dabbled here and there in the rest of them, but haven't beaten any of the others yet. How about all of you? Any of you played the bootlegs or want to?

(Cause if ya want to, I have a pack full of them, and by bootlegs, I don't mean the Pokémon bootlegs that are actually platformers like Sonic or Mario)

Courtesy of a person named NRS (NewRisingSun), I have every single version of the bootleg Pokémon games that actually play like Pokémon. So right now, aside from playing my stockpile of GB/GBC hacks and messing around with glitches, just kind of exploring that bootleg realm.

That won't get you very far. If you want to do proper hacking, hex editing is not the way to go. Even for toying, it's more than limited.

If I owned a PC, then I would be doing actual hacking.

There is an emulator on android called VGBANext that has a built-in debugger and anti-crash methods, so I mean, maybe you can utilize that somehow.

are you looking for the "ROM fucks memory on its own" kind of thing? That I can provide, specifically.

Only for Yellow and Crystal, already have it for red/blue & gold/silver.

But mostly I'm looking for codes or patches that give you glitch Pokemon, or something similar, that way I can start a fresh game with glitches.

It is unfortunate there hasn't been a glitchdex only hack, where all we have are glitches to catch and battle with.
