Generation I Glitch Discussion / Oddity in Blue
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:39:01 pm »
I seem to recall that when I was going through the Elite Four in my Blue version, I noticed something odd about Lance's Dragonite...

I think I was fighting him with a beefy Starmie that I caught along the Cinnabar coast (Old Man trick, yadda yadda). I used either Thunderbolt or Thunder (I don't remember which; it's been a while) on Lance's Dragonite. And to my surprise, it said "It's not very effective...."
But...Dragonite's part flying...so I assumed I'd hit at x1 power, not x0.5 power. :???:

Is Lance cheating again (like he does in G/S/C)? Or is my game weird? Or am I just crazy?

Video Game Glitches Discussion / Mega Man X reset glitch
« on: March 26, 2010, 11:13:07 pm »
I recently became re-addicted to the Mega Man X series, and in looking up random glitch videos on Youtube, I found one that I've never personally experienced, but that seems to appear in video after video.

Now I'm not sure if this glitch appears on the SNES version (not mine, at least) or only on ROMs or emulators (forgive me on the topic of emulators, etc.- I have zero experience with them, or their terminology).
But here's the gist of it.
In most every video I've seen, the levels will play normally until the player fires their X-buster at something that deflects it (i.e. the igloos in Chill Penguin's stage, Chill Penguin when he's sliding/about to slide). When they do so, the screen fades out, and fades back in to the "You got *insert weapon here*!" screen. From here, the game will occasionally go back to the level select screen. More often, though, the screen fades out, and then fades back in to the HIGHWAY stage instead- the intro stage. The player will retain whatever weapon they just got, but any upgrades (such as the dash upgrade) will vanish mysteriously.

I actually find it quite funny to listen to the people in the videos freaking out. But I digress. :P

Occasionally, the 'reset' seems random- no deflection or anything, just resets for no particular reason. My curiosity is up- considering my lack of any kind of specialized technology other than an SNES, a PS2, and a copy of the original game and of X collection, I figured this would be the best place to hunt for more info.

Has anyone else heard of this glitch? Or know why it occurs? Or when?

Edit: And on the topic of Mega Man X glitches, X3's Tunnel Rhino just flew through the wall and vanished. And the screen was still shaking. And the sound effects kept coming. And when I fired at the wall he went through, it killed him. O_o What did I DO?

My first impression on seeing this team is that Togekiss pretty much makes an infinitively better parafuser than Poliwrath, and that Quick Claw is unneeded on Ampharos when you already have Ambipom to Baton Pass speed to it. Other than that, if you just want to beat your brother, perhaps you could tell us what you know of his team so we can suggest counters for it.

Hm...hadn't originally thought of the Agility Baton pass...good point...
Unfortunately, I don't know what's on his team, nor does he know what's on mine. It'll likely be a blind battle.

Edit: Okay, here's my second idea. Ditch the Glaceon and teach the Poliwrath Ice Punch in place of Double team/Submission. Instead of the Glaecon...

Snorlax @ Lum berry/Chesto Berry
Belly Drum
Rest
Earthuquake
Crunch

Maxes attack, Rests off the damage, and then pounds away with Earthquake or Crunch. Possible to Agility him up from Ambipom as well. This would solve my niggling of not having something with Earthquake in this set...

Ugh, forget that; I don't need three normal types and nothing for fighting types. Here's a more thought-out idea...

Heracross @ (some item I haven't thought of yet)
Earthquake
Aerial Ace
Megahorn
Something else I haven't decided on yet.

There! Something that covers my lack of something to take out fliers, lack of something to take out Electrics, and who can switch in on Ambipom's Baton Pass of there's a fighting type waiting. And I've never raised one, so it could be fun.

Quick Claw is not very good.  It could take your enemy by surprise, but it is not reliable enough.

It's saved my butt enough times for me to want it. And Ambipom can Baton Pass Agility to Ampharos if I see fit to send him in as well. Besides, Ampharos isn't the most frail thing I've ever raised; even if the Claw doesn't kick in, he doesn't often die right off.
I was actually hoping for an opinion on the team as a whole, and on the moves I'm unsure about...

So far, this team is half-finished; three are still waiting for me to decide on the details before I move on.  It's a single battles team, one I'll probably use on wifi. I'll decide on natures and whatnot later; at the moment, I'm still finalizing the movesets. Everyone's at level 50. Everyone except maybe the Poliwrath I plan to have as a male (Ambipom doesn't matter so much in gender either).
The only thing that bugs me about this team is its lack of a good Ground move (i.e Earthquake) and hence a lack of a way to take out Electric types.

Ambipom @ Focus Sash
Agility
Nasty Plot
Baton Pass
Substitue/Swift/Double Hit (Can't decide...)

Ambipom is my lead- he sets up and Baton Passes to whatever I feel like (Ampharos if I need a special sweeper, Ursaring if I just want to go physical). Focus Sash for his somewhat low defenses.

Ampharos (Roscoe) @ Quick Claw
Thunderbolt
Signal Beam
Power Gem
Focus Blast

Already raised, hits like a truck, and is waiting to sweep. Quick Claw because he’s slow . . . really slow. His speed ended up being like 60.

Arcanine (Rahzar) @ Zap Plate
Flamethrower (I looked at Fire Fang, looked at his special attack, and chucked it for Flamethrower)
Thunder Fang
Crunch
Extremespeed

Zap Plate to boost Thunder Fang, his weakest move.

Ursaring (Ringo) @ Flame Orb (Guts)
Protect
Façade
Crunch
Brick Break

Protect to activate the Flame Orb and then pound away.  Crunch for ghosts, Brick Break for steels and rocks. I’m hoping Ambipom’s agility will pair nicely with him, boosting him up so he can outspeed more than he can now. He's pretty slow as well...I think his speed came out to 85 or so.

Poliwrath @ (item yet to be chosen)
Waterfall
Body Slam
Attract
Double Team/Submission

Planning on a possible Parattract.  The fourth move has me wavering, though; Submission is fun, but Double Team might be irritating (also fun).

Glaceon @ Brightpowder
Blizzard
Hail
Water Pulse
Shadow Ball

Basically something to take out dragons.  Takes full advantage of Blizzard+Snow Cloak.

Tips or opinions, please? This is the first team I’ve made that’s actually got a set-up; in the past, I’ve preferred sweepers. I’m hoping this is the team that’ll finally beat my brother’s.

Ah, the crazy nicknames I've come up with...I think my insanity started with a night of hyperactivity and DudeGuy the Swampert...went on to such things as Stay Puff the Togekiss (my dad's fault), Nom the Gliscor (the fangs! The fangs are creepily adorable!), Sir Bob II the Mamoswine (....I have no explanation for this one...), Fluffy the Drapion (^_^), Carpe Diem the Gyarados...
....Though I do have a Politoed I call Twerp. He is the Murphy's Law pokemon; he hates me. Yet he seemed to hate me less AFTER I changed his name to Twerp. Odd.
I can't help it; every pokemon I raise winds up with the most ridiculous nickname. Oogala the Starmie. That was a fun one to come up with.

...Well, if you're gonna use Palkia and Kyogre, who cares about what the rest of the team has on it?
Slowhand might care in the off chance that Palkia and Kyogre get KO'd.

*facepalm* I was being sarcastic. I hate Palkia and I hate Kyogre; again, it's personal. I wasn't suggesting a 2-pokemon team.

Well, excuse me. I have indeed battled against real opponents, thank you very much. I have a personal preference not to just use legendaries to crush everything in my path. I like raising things from eggs and making diverse teams. It's just my style, hence the advice I tried to give.

Get your team a fire type and a ground type, and no more waters. Keep it balanced.
obvious not knowing what you're talking about is obvious

If you keep Kyogre in there, you could probably get 4 more rain abusers (Palkia, Kingdra, Ludicolo, Kabutops, etc) and pretty much sweep unprepared teams. I suggest getting a Palkia at least if possible.

...Not knowing what I'm talking about? I beg your pardon? Electric types LOVE Drizzle to buff Thunder to 100% acuracy...electric types also love water....as do grass types.

Quote
I EV trained a hasty Palkia. 252 Special attack, 252 speed, 6 attack. Would an Electivire be a good choice?

Sounds like a good choice, particularly if you give it Earthquake to stave off hungry Electrics.
1. Palkia resists Electric, also with powerful enough rain abusers you can just KO any Electrics attempting to switch in
2. Most Electric types would have Thunderbolt over Thunder unless they're also on a rain team
3. Name one grass type not named Ludicolo that likes rain. I dare you.
4. Fire types aren't going to do much when you have permanent rain from Kyogre.

...I don't CARE about Palkia. Palkia will KO ANYTHING. He doesn't count.
...Grass type....doesn't care about rain....sure, Solarbeam takes two turns but....
Yes, I admit to forgetting about fire type + Drizzle. So teach the thing Sunny Day. Whatever.

Hey, this is just the way I raise a team- I go for diversity. Sorry for trying to give advice. =_=

...Huh. No replies; my brother sounded mildly disappointed. Anyhow, since I already have a thread of my teams here, I thought I'd pose a query I have.
I can't decide on how to raise the Arcanine I have in mind- which moveset to give it, to be precise. I'm thinking either....
Quirky nature- Flamethrower, Thunder Fang, Extremespeed, Crunch
or
Adamant nature or plus speed minus special attack (don't have 'em all memorized, sorry)- Shell Bell- Double Edge, Flare Blitz, Thunder Fang, Crunch

I'm not sure which would work better (still Ditto hunting for that adamant nature). Anyone have an opinion?

What is your main?

Uhm...for the 25 minutes I played it when I rented it, I think I was using Don... =_=

Never played Tournament Fighters, so I can't say about Aska...
Slashuur, yes. Despite the fact that he sadly never appeared in the TV series, he was cool- and the energy drain was awesome.
He should've been in the Battle Nexus part in the show.
And who wouldn't want to play a Samurai Utrom?

*chuckle* Good point. Despite how many times the actualy Battle Nexus game had me screaming and wanting to throw things at the TV, Slashuur was indeed cool.
Hmm.... *fanfic bunnies being to bite*
