Pokémon Discussion / Re: Pokémon Sword and Shield Discussion

First impressions (picked up Shield):
- Game is easy
- Game is fun
- Wild Area is extremely cool
- Game is very visually appealing
- Routes are straightforward

There's some un-obvious technical issues, too, like things popping in and frames dropping here and there, but the game as a whole is fun, and that's really what matters. Unpolished fun, but fun nonetheless.

Man, I miss the unique battle facilities of the earlier gens, specifically the Gen 3 Battle Frontier...

I remember having quite an enjoyable run in the Battle Subway and Battle Maison in Pokemon White and Pokemon Omega Ruby, but I never really was able to get into it because of how rigged the AI seemed at times. It seemed that, no matter what I did, even if the move I used or switch I made would make no sense whatsoever, the AI would respond with the perfect counterplay, every single time. Not to mention that it'd seem like the AI's moves would never miss and would crit at the worst possible times.

It's possible to chalk it up to RNG, but there were definitely times where I felt like those specific battle facilities were coded differently in order to unfairly up the challenge on the player.

Man... the more I hear about Sword and Shield, the more I don't want to buy it.

I put details about the game in a spoiler tag in case anyone doesn't want to get spoiled. You've been warned.

EDIT: I don't know how to use spoiler tags! So I posted the spoilers below in an attachment.

Anyone get Luigi's Mansion 3 recently? I've been thinking of picking it up to hold me over until Sword and Shield come out in a few weeks.

Looks like the entire game got leaked online somewhere--leaks have been coming out pretty consistently over the past two days or so. There's a full Pokedex out there circulating, along with images/reveals of all the new Pokemon. Won't post about it here for the sake of spoilers, but if you wanna look for that information, it's out there.

Apparently the games only run in 720p at 30fps... in docked mode. Pretty disappointing; most Switch games run at 900p or higher.

Did they really make a Gigantamax Meowth that's literally just Longcat? Never thought I'd be using a Longcat reference in 2019...

Bought Super Mario Maker 2 recently. I've been enjoying the Story Mode--professionally-made Mario levels are a timeless treat--but I haven't found a ton of enjoyment out of user-made levels yet. Apparently there's a way to filter levels by type; I'm hoping to figure that out soon so I can play more traditional levels. I don't have much interest in the level editor myself, but maybe I'll play around with that at some point.

Also getting deep back into Minecraft. Building a new village.

General Discussion / Re: The dream thread
« on: October 07, 2019, 06:43:50 pm »
Had a dream today that I was back in middle school, but I wasn't in the middle school that I went to as a child; instead, I was at a middle school about 15 minutes down the road. One of my friend's moms was my math teacher, and the school itself was way nicer overall than the one I actually went to. Sitting next to my former middle/high school crush in the dream was weird, too--even though I kind of hate her guts now, she's still popping up in my dreams. Odd.

Also was on oddly vivid dream. The environment was really well-developed and I remembered and vividly dreamt about people that I hadn't actually seen in years.

Honestly, even though Super Mystery Dungeon wasn't my favorite Mystery Dungeon game (Explorers of ____ was way better imo), it's still a solid game overall. Great replay value and there's tons to do even after you finish the core game. It's a shame I don't play my 3DS much anymore ever since the Switch game out, though. There's some great games (like Mystery Dungeon) that I'd like developers to bring over to the Switch.

bring Mega Evolutions back!

Let's bring Pokemon back.
That should probably be higher on the priority list, I agree!

I still think they should have left in Mega-Evolution as a constant mechanic in all the games going forward starting with Gen 6. It was such a cool mechanic and breathed life into old Pokemon that had fallen from relevance in the meta, and gave them pretty cool new designs too. Gen 7 gave us Z-moves which were definitely less cool, but still cool in a vacuum; Gen 8 gives us Dynamaxing which essentially combines the two? But rather than give us cool new designs (a la Mega Evolutions), we just get blown-up versions of existing Pokemon. Pretty lame by comparison--bring Mega Evolutions back!

Honestly I kind of understand that mechanic if you're not playing in any one, long, continuous session. It's probably intended so that players can leave their system in sleep mode overnight and wake up to more SP. But having that method (or paying) be the only way a player can gain more SP is really poor game design imo.

Darn, after seeing R'duckulus I like that design a lot better. :(

I'm really hopeful that they'll continue the trend of evolving older Pokemon besides just Farfetch'd in this game. I don't want new Mega-evolutions or new region-specific variants--entirely new evolutions would be great to breathe life into otherwise-dead Pokemon (looking at you, Dunsparce).
