'Common Names' for Glitch Pokemon
« on: May 04, 2009, 04:32:58 pm »
So, GlitchDex 2.0 is awesome and all, but I was looking for Glitcherino, and I realize I have no idea what its name actually IS. (Never did find it.)

Seeing as I couldn't find any threads for this... I propose we put in a little column with their common names (What we call them.). The main point is so we can just use Ctrl+F to find their names, and have easier navigation of the page. Not everyone knows the hex values.
GONE.

Missing? NO!

I guess that is true. If others know of the "real" names of the glitches, post them up and their common names, like Glitcherino. I think that Glitcherino is another way of saying Nidorino Hybird or the fact Glitcherino is a hybird of a real Nidorino. (Sorry, if this sounds so strange, I've only had like 5 to 6 hours of sleep and it's kinda make me making not much sense.)

It would definitely help.

See this.

The common name will be a redirect to the dex designation. Common names will not be visible in the GlitchDex listing because I want to dissuade people from using them; if anyone has issue with this, reply to this thread.

I do have a problem with it. It will be hard to remember what dex designation is what. Mainly with R/S/E/FR/LG decmarks. They will also be much more annoying to use then the common designations. The only place designations should be used is for the item dex, in my opinion.

Well even if you don't display common names in the GlitchDex, people are still gonna throw them around, and wouldn't you rather have fewer people confused than more?

I mean, they've got nice, standard, international Latin names for all known species, but I don't see wikipedia not including "Purple Sea Urchin" on their page for  Strongylocentrotus purpuratus.

Although, I notice we tend to use common names more often with TM/HM moves and the more common glitch pokemon (e.g. Missingno., 'M, the ditto glitch obtainable stuff), and far less often with more obscure stuff (e.g. when the common name itself is incomprehensible and very long). But yeah, people have to call glitches by some humanly comprehendable name...

The difference between real-world species and Pokemon glitches is that something like "purple sea urchin" is easier to pronounce, read, and type than garbage characters, "Chisai-u #24", or "[blank] #41." I can definitely see why common names for MissingNo., 'M, etc. are used. However the name "MissingNo." itself refers to several glitches in Red/Blue version, in Yellow version, in Green version, and is popularly used for glitches in other versions. I think that particular page would be a general description of the "missing number" message and all the Pokemon that have it as a name. 'M should redirect to GlitchDex/RB:000, but our particular MediaWiki setup balks at apostrophes in pagenames. Others, such as "Glitcherino" and "Charizard 'M" should redirect to the appropriate article and should have a mention about the common name in the "misc details" section such as this, although perhaps that section should be moved before the attack listing.

As an aside, I never liked using "Chisai-u" in the GlitchDex. The first Melchior used "Japanese Symbol." I would have thought it was TR Rose who introduced the "Chisai-u" stuff but her page on that glitch also uses "Japanese Symbol" (her GlitchDex and ours are based off the same Melchior data). In all honesty, I think it was someone Over There who made that variation popular but for whatever reason that was the nomenclature used in Melchior 2 and beyond. I really don't want to mention those names if at all possible.
