I recently installed Ubuntu with wubi, and I was wondering if there is anything I should be aware of or any applications I should get.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do. Need a word processor? Install Abiword. Need an emulator? Try out a few different ones to see which ones work best.

If you do any programming, learning one of the major UNIX text editors (vi/Vim or Emacs) might be a worthwhile exercise to improve your productivity. You?ll never go back to Notepad again.

I use KEdit in KDE or gEdit in GNOME.  vi and Emacs have too many shortcuts to remember.

I tried to use Wubi to install Ubuntu on my portable hard disk. Somehow I corrupted the boot record of the main hard disk, which sucked. Eventually I just found Windows 2000 and installed it. Maybe I'll try it again, on my main disk (which is where I guess it is supposed to be used). I also tried to use unetbootin to install Ubuntu on the portable drive, but I guess portable HDs are in a different class than USB flash drives?

Eh, guess that makes me... a Wubi noobie. :-/

I?ve never used Wubi, but livecds are always an option for portable Linux. They don?t affect your hard disk at all AFAIK. Of course, that?s assuming your computer can boot from CD, but what PC can?t these days?

Thanks a lot. I am having problems installing Flash Player though. I have tried what seems like every combination of downloaded files/terminal commands to no avail. Do any of you guys have something I could try?

The flash player is nonfree sofware. Have you added the "nonfree" repository to your apt sources list?

You lost me.

EDIT: Never mind. I just installed Opera, which came with a flash plugin. Thanks for trying to help though.
