Hmm...It seems like we should invent an HM that has never been invented though. (thinking).....Oh, I know! In Pokemon ranger, there are 2 field abilities, air lift and elevate that get you across gaps and raise you up a floor in a cave. What if we used something like those? There could also be something like riding a Pokemon in the overworld, instead of using a bike or running shoes, and maybe the Pokemon could jump up those small ledges or something.
Edit: Also, any main 8 HMs that we're not making up/making up can be HMs. Any leftover main ones can be like SMs (Super Machines) which are reusable techniques that have Overworld effects that do not need a badge to be able to be used on the Overworld.SMs:FlashDefogWhirlpool
I don't mean flying everywhere. Only in certain spots, since thats how it is in Ranger. Let me explain: With Airlift, you cannot just fly, you use it to jump over gaps (specifically, lava rivers in the Boyleland volcano.). We could use it for a similar thing, or two ledges that are 1-4 squares close, but seperated by a huge drop. Likewise, elevate can only be used in a similar way to rock climb and have a height limit, or for going up holes in the caves. We make it where its things like that, not flying over buildings or trees or anything. In fact, using Airlift in Ranger could only be done with a current of hot air for the Drifloon that you use :p. Just mark the specified spots with an air current.
Actually, I had an idea for fly being used for puzzles. [attachment=1]

Well, since my idea of not having HMs was rejected, I bring forward the following suggestions in order of preference:1. HMs can be used simply by having them in your bag, like in Mystery Dungeon.2. You can keep 2 extra Pokemon in your party which you can only use for HMs and other field moves, but not battling.3. At the start of the game, the professor gives you 2 Pokemon which have crappy base stats (to prevent them from being useful for anything else) that can between the two of them learn all the HMs.4. 2 Pokemon that can learn all the HMs between them, or whose evolutions can learn all the HMs between them, are available near to the start of the game.
